To determine the optimal conditions of pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of polyphenols from black chokeberry leaves (BCL), temperature, time and sample-to-solvent ratio (SSR) were varied to obtain maximum polyphenols yield. The extracts were analyzed for total polyphenols (TP) as well as individual ones (UPLC ESI MS) and antioxidant capacity (FRAP, DPPH and ORAC). Moreover, the biological activity of the selected extracts was additionally determined.

Article Synopsis
  • PDEVs from organic agriculture contain high levels of antioxidants and have shown increased antioxidant power compared to single-plant PDEVs due to synergistic effects.
  • A mixture of PDEVs from five fruits was found to contain beneficial compounds and effectively restored redox balance and mitochondrial health in treated human skin cells.
  • The findings suggest that PDEVs play a vital role in preventing and treating skin injuries by enhancing antioxidant actions and facilitating repair processes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how plant resistance affects viral fitness and leads to the emergence of resistance-breaking strains, particularly in potyviruses like the papaya ringspot virus (PRSV).
  • The research identifies specific mutations in the VPg protein of PRSV that allow it to evade interaction with the primary resistance factor, eIF4E, while instead engaging with a different version called eIF(iso)4E.
  • The findings highlight potential targets for breeding watermelon plants that can resist these newly adapted viral strains, enhancing crop protection.

The aim of the study was to analyze the potential health-promoting and nutritional components of leaves and figs from several Spanish varieties of Ficus carica L. The study focused to identify (by LC-PDA-QTof/MS) and quantify (by UPLC-PDA-FL) various components including carotenoids, chlorophylls, tocols, amino acids, phenolic acids, flavonols, anthocyanins. Besides, the sugar profile, the antioxidant capacity (ORAC, FRAP and ABTS) and the in vitro hypoglycaemic potential via inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase were evaluated.
