Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) catalyzes the first step in the fixation of atmospheric CO(2) during C(4) photosynthesis. The crystal structure of C(4) form maize PEPC (ZmPEPC), the first structure of the plant PEPCs, has been determined at 3.0 A resolution. The structure includes a sulfate ion at the plausible binding site of an allosteric activator, glucose 6-phosphate. The crystal structure of E. coli PEPC (EcPEPC) complexed with Mn(2+), phosphoenolpyruvate analog (3,3-dichloro-2-dihydroxyphosphinoylmethyl-2-propenoate), and an allosteric inhibitor, aspartate, has also been determined at 2.35 A resolution. Dynamic movements were found in the ZmPEPC structure, compared with the EcPEPC structure, around two loops near the active site. On the basis of these molecular structures, the mechanisms for the carboxylation reaction and for the allosteric regulation of PEPC are proposed.

A synthetic variety (SV) of maize may not become stable if the sample size representing each parental line (m) is small. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of m on the inbreeding coefficient (IC) of the SV (FSynL) and on the stability of its genetic constitution. An SV formed by randomly mating l unrelated lines whose inbreeding coefficient is F was considered, and a random sample was taken from the genotypic array of the progeny produced by selfing a parental line A1A2 (GA) This sample was visualized as a set of g groups of four plants whose genotypes are all four of the GA and e represented the number of plants that failed to form a group.

Flavonoids are a large group of secondary metabolites, which are responsible for pigmentation, signaling, protection from unfavorable environmental conditions, and other important functions, as well as providing numerous benefits for human health. Various stages of flavonoid biosynthesis are subject to complex regulation by three groups of transcription regulators-MYC-like bHLH, R2R3-MYB and WDR which form the MBW regulatory complex. We attempt to cover the main aspects of this intriguing regulatory system in plants, as well as to summarize information on their distinctive features in cereals.

Low-temperature (LT) stress seriously affects the distribution, seedling survival, and grain yield of maize. At the seedling emergence stage, maize's coleoptile is one of the most sensitive organs in sensing LT signaling and, in general, it can envelop young leaves to protect them from LT damage. In addition, brassinolides (BRs) have been shown to enhance LT tolerance from various species, but the effects of BRs on coleoptiles in maize seedlings under LT stress are unclear.

In the greenhouse of the Chinese Academy of Sciences located on Huaizhong Road in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province, five fertilization treatment levels were established. These consisted of no fertilization (CK), conventional chemical fertilizer (with 100% chemical fertilizer application), and biogas slurry substitution treatments for chemical fertilizers (replacing 30%, 60%, and 100% of the chemical fertilizer nitrogen with biogas slurry nitrogen). Soil nutrient determination methods and high-throughput sequencing were employed to elucidate the correlative relationship between soil nutrients and microbial community metabolism.

Linear dextrin (LD), a low-molecular-weight carbohydrate, regarded as a type of short amylose, can form resistant starch when combined with fatty acids. This study investigated the structural properties and in vitro digestion of linear dextrins and their complexes with lauric acid (LA). Four groups of linear dextrins were prepared by pretreating gelatinized high-amylose maize starch (HAMS) with pullulanase followed by gradient ethanol precipitation at concentrations of 0 %, 50 %, 60 %, and 70 % (v/v).
