Lipophilic gel chromatography using Sephadex LH-20 helps in separating alpha-, beta- + -gamma, and delta-tocopherol and also in separation of their oxidation products e.g. the tocopherolquinones or other oxidation products. This preseparation can help to overcome analytical problems due to the complexity of synthesis mixtures of tocopherol oxidation procedures as well as in separation of complex physiological matrices. Determination of the preseparated tocopherols, tocopherolquinonesand tocopherolhydroquinones can then be achieved by means of GC-MS measurement of the free substances or their trimethylsilyl derivatives.

Background: Edible oils are susceptible to contamination with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) throughout production, storage, and transportation processes due to their lipophilic nature. The necessity of quantifying PAHs present in complex oil matrices at trace levels, which bind strongly to impurities in oil matrices, poses a major challenge to the accurate quantification of these contaminants. Therefore, the development of straightforward and effective methods for the separation and enrichment of PAHs in oil samples prior to instrumental analysis is paramount to guaranteeing food safety.

Gel coating films comprising nanodiamonds organo-modified with 12-hydroxystearic (12-OHC ) and stearic acids were prepared and characterized. Because molecules with 12-OHC groups can convert solvents into thixotropic gels, Gemini-type diamide derivatives with two 12-OHC chains were also introduced as thixotropic additives into the gel coating films. Although the 12-OHC -modified nanodiamonds did not lead to solvent gelation on their own, they displayed an affinity for the thixotropic additive molecules.

Halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. The development of methods to detect HOPs in fish is challenging owing to the compositional complexity of fish matrices, which contain high levels of lipids and relatively low concentrations of HOPs. In addition, the lipophilicity of most HOPs renders their extraction difficult.

Article Synopsis
  • Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disease, and Boswellia serrata (BS) gum resin shows potential in managing inflammatory conditions, although its effectiveness is limited due to poor absorption in the body.
  • The study tests a new formulation of Boswellia called Boswellia nano emulsion gel (BNG) on mice with dermatitis induced to resemble psoriasis, finding that BNG significantly reduces inflammation and the associated symptoms.
  • Results indicated that treatment with BNG lowers gene expression linked to inflammation compared to control groups, suggesting its therapeutic potential, but more clinical studies are needed to confirm these findings in humans.

Membrane interaction studies of isoniazid derivatives active against drug-resistant tuberculosis.

February 2025

Departamento de Química e Bioquímica, Faculdade de Ciências, Centro de Química Estrutural, Institute of Molecular Sciences, Universidade de Lisboa, Campo Grande 1749-016, Portugal. Electronic address:

Tuberculosis is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide due to the growth of multi-drug resistant strains unsusceptible to currently available therapies. Four compounds, isoniazid (INH) and three derivatives, N'-decanoylisonicotinohydrazide (INHC10), N'-(E)-(4-phenoxybenzylidene)isonicotinohydrazide (N34) and N'-(4-phenoxybenzyl)isonicotinohydrazide (N34red), were studied. Owing to their advantageous in vitro selectivity index against the primary mutation responsible for drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), as well as their suitable lipophilicity and interaction with human serum albumin, INHC10 and N34 were deemed promising antitubercular compounds.
