Purpose: To assess contrast material-enhanced harmonic power Doppler and fundamental color Doppler ultrasonography (US) in the detection of residual viable tumor tissue after radio-frequency (RF) ablation in tumors embedded in fat.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-eight VX2 tumors were implanted into the retroperitoneum of 14 rabbits. Tumors were examined with contrast-enhanced fundamental color Doppler US and harmonic power Doppler US before and 10 minutes after RF ablation. Saline-enhanced RF ablation (30 mL/h) was performed over 10 minutes with 28-W RF power. Follow-up included repeat US examinations. Necropsies and histopathologic assessment were performed after detection of residual untreated tumor at US or 3 weeks after ablation.

Results: VX2 tumors reached a mean size of 21 mm +/- 9 (SD) (size range, 6-43 mm) 25 days after implantation. All tumors larger than 31 mm showed signs of central necrosis at US. Before ablation, intense vascularity was detected in all tumors with both contrast-enhanced US modes. Histopathologic assessment at the end of the follow-up period revealed local relapses due to incomplete ablation in 14 (50%) of 28 cases. Detection of residual tumor was missed in all cases with contrast-enhanced color Doppler US. Contrast-enhanced harmonic power Doppler US depicted residual flow in 12 of the 14 cases (sensitivity, 86%) in which local relapses occurred. There was a significant (P <.005, McNemar test) improvement in detection of residual tumor when the harmonic power Doppler mode was used.

Conclusion: Contrast-enhanced harmonic power Doppler US has greater sensitivity than contrast-enhanced color Doppler US for detecting residual VX2 tumor following ablation. Therefore, contrast-enhanced harmonic power Doppler US may be a useful additional method for the detection of residual tumors after RF ablation.

We present a comparative experimental study of supercontinuum generation in undoped scintillator crystals: bismuth germanate (BGO), yttrium orthosilicate (YSO), lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO), lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) and gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG), pumped by 180 fs fundamental harmonic pulses of an amplified Yb:KGW laser. In addition to these materials, experiments in yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG), potassium gadolinium tungstate (KGW) and lithium tantalate (LT) were performed under identical experimental settings (focusing geometry and sample thickness), which served for straightforward comparison of supercontinuum generation performances. The threshold and optimal (that produces optimized red-shifted spectral extent) pump pulse energies for supercontinuum generation were evaluated from detailed measurements of spectral broadening dynamics.

The use of quantum mechanical potentials in protein-ligand affinity prediction is becoming increasingly feasible with growing computational power. To move forward, validation of such potentials on real-world challenges is necessary. To this end, we have collated an extensive set of over a thousand galectin inhibitors with known affinities and docked them into galectin-3.

Regressions on quantum neural networks at maximal expressivity.

Sci Rep

Departamento de Física, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Avda. de la Universidad 30, 28911, Leganés, Spain.

Considering a universal deep neural network organized as a series of nested qubit rotations, accomplished by adjustable data re-uploads we analyze its expressivity. This ability to approximate continuous functions in regression tasks is quantified making use of a partial Fourier decomposition of the generated output and systematically benchmarked with the aid of a teacher-student scheme. While the maximal expressive power increases with the depth of the network and the number of qubits, it is fundamentally bounded by the data encoding mechanism.

Advanced control strategy for AC microgrids: a hybrid ANN-based adaptive PI controller with droop control and virtual impedance technique.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering and Diagnostics of Electrical Equipment, Institute of Electrodynamics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Beresteyskiy, 56, Kyiv-57, Kyiv, 03680, Ukraine.

In this paper, an improved voltage control strategy for microgrids (MG) is proposed, using an artificial neural network (ANN)-based adaptive proportional-integral (PI) controller combined with droop control and virtual impedance techniques (VIT). The control strategy is developed to improve voltage control, power sharing and total harmonic distortion (THD) reduction in the MG systems with renewable and distributed generation (DG) sources. The VIT is used to decouple active and reactive power, reduce negative power interactions between DG's and improve the robustness of the system under varying load and generation conditions.
