Schizophrenia: two-faced meaning of vulnerability.

Am J Med Genet

Department of Psychiatry, Ste Marguerite Hospital, Marseille, France.

Published: December 2002

The authors stress the current two-faced meaning of vulnerability that conveys both an objective and a subjective direction of sense, leading to a naturalistic model as well as a humanistic one. These models are heirs of both the Kraepelinian and Bleulerian conceptions of schizophrenia. Coping strategies and resilience are core concepts of the humanistic model. Research on these protective factors may be of major importance in the current debate on prevention in schizophrenia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates inherited genetic defects in blood coagulation, focusing on the coagulation factor V gene and how mutations affect clinical phenotypes, which can lead to either bleeding or thrombosis disorders.
  • A family case study revealed a premature stop-codon mutation in the coagulation factor V gene that resulted in very low FV levels in the affected male, who experienced severe bleeding, while his father had a history of severe thrombosis.
  • Advanced coagulation tests indicated that the family members exhibited varying responses to activated protein C, providing insights into their contrasting clinical outcomes despite shared genetic backgrounds.

The two-faced process of learning and the importance of Janus-faced solutions.

NPJ Sci Learn

December 2023

Department of Scandinavian Languages, Uppsala University, Thunbergsv 3L, 751 20, Uppsala, Sweden.

Significant developments have been made to our understanding of how children learn, putting essential pieces to the puzzle of what it means to be human. Theories of learning are, however, headed in diverging directions, and this perspective paper argues that this dispersion can recapitulate recurring schisms in developmental and learning sciences about learning as a predominantly individually constructed or socially transferred process. It is argued that this opposition is unnecessary and that an encompassing understanding of learning should consider both directions.

The intersection between toxicology and aging research: A toxic aging coin perspective.

Front Aging

September 2022

NeuroWise Laboratory of Environmental Neurotoxicology, Pediatrics Research Institute, Department of Pediatrics, University of Louisville, Louisville, KY, United States.

We are imminently faced with the challenges of an increasingly aging population and longer lifespans due to improved health care. Concomitantly, we are faced with ubiquitous environmental pollution linked with various health effects and age-related diseases which contribute to increased morbidity with age. Geriatric populations are rarely considered in the development of environmental regulations or in toxicology research.

The Two-Faced Role of Autophagy in Endometrial Cancer.

Front Cell Dev Biol

March 2022

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan.

Autophagy, meaning "self-eating," is a cellular catabolic process that involves lysosomal degradation of cytoplasmic materials. Autophagy contributes to both quality control and energy supply of cells, which are associated with tumorigenesis and tumor development, respectively. Endometrial cancer (EC) is the most common gynecologic cancer, and its incidence is increasing.

In order to describe experiences of living with opioid dependence, thirteen interviews were conducted with people participating in medication-assisted treatment. The results showed that living with opioid dependence is about the two-faced drug. The participant's past was a constant burden in life, and the drug filled a spiritual emptiness.
