Unlabelled: There is concern about the toxicity of Compound (Co) A. Absorbents differ in the production of Co A during minimal-flow sevoflurane anesthesia. Strong alkali-free Amsorb does not produce Co A. It was our aim to study Superia, another new NaOH- and KOH-free CO(2) absorbent, in minimal-flow anesthesia, compared with KOH-free Sofnolime. After Ethics Committee approval, 14 consenting adult patients were included randomly by using Superia or Sofnolime as the CO(2) absorbent in the compact 750-mL canister of an ADU ventilator. After propofol and remifentanil administration, sevoflurane was given in oxygen and air (500 mL/min; fraction of inspired oxygen, 0.4), aiming at an end-tidal concentration of 2.3%-2.5%; ventilation aimed for 33-35 mm Hg PETCO(2). Compound A inspired (Co A(insp)) and expired (Co A(exp)) samples were taken for analysis, and canister temperatures were measured for 150 min. Statistical analysis was performed with the Friedman test or the Mann-Whitney U-test where appropriate. Correction for multiple testing was used. In the Superia group, no significant amount of Co A was formed, whereas in the Sofnolime group, maximum median (range) inspiratory values of 25 ppm (16 ppm) were found. The intergroup difference was P < 0.05. No difference was noticed between the two groups for the canister CO(2) absorbent temperature.
Implications: During minimal-flow 2.3%-2.5% end-tidal sevoflurane, no compound A (Co A) is formed with the NaOH- and KOH-free CO(2) absorbent Superia. Although Co A values with KOH-free Sofnolime are still within reported safe limits, Superia is definitely an alternative for safe clinical practice.

Photoactive complexes of bioessential 3d metals, activable within the phototherapeutic window (650-900 nm), have gained widespread interest due to their therapeutic potential. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization, and light-enhanced anticancer and antibacterial properties of four new dinuclear Co(II) complexes: [Co(phen)(cat)] (Co-1), [Co(dppz)(cat)] (Co-2), [Co(phen)(esc)] (Co-3), and [Co(dppz)(esc)] (Co-4). In these complexes, phen (1,10-phenanthroline) and dppz (dipyrido[3,2-:2',3'-]phenazine) act as neutral N,N-donor ligands, while cat and esc serve as O,O-donor catecholate ligands derived from catechol (1,2-dihydroxybenzene) and esculetin (6,7-dihydroxy coumarin).

Water-lean absorbents are regarded as a new generation of post-combustion CO2 capture technology that could significantly relieve those drawbacks posed by traditional aqueous alkanolamines. However, the exponential increase in viscosity during CO2 absorption remains an urgent issue that needs to be resolved before their practical deployment. In this work, novel water-lean amines based on biomass glycerol have been devised as single-component CO2 absorbents with low viscosity (79~110 cP at 25 oC, 29~39 cP at 40 oC) under high capacity (12~18 wt% at 25 oC, 10~17 wt% at 40 oC).

The tolerance and degradation characteristics of a marine oil-degrading strain Acinetobacter sp. Y9 were investigated in the presence of diesel oil and simulated radioactive nuclides (Mn, Co, Ni, Sr, Cs) at varying concentrations, as well as exposure to γ-ray radiation (Co-60). The maximum tolerable concentrations for Coand Ni were found to be 5 mg/l and 25 mg/l, respectively, while the tolerable concentrations for Mn, Sr, and Cs exceeded 400 mg/l, 1000 mg/l, and 1000 mg/l, respectively.

CQHC, a novel colorimetric fluorescent sensor, developed for the selective sensing of ions and well characterised, including SC-XRD. It demonstrated selective sensing for Co, Zn, Hg and F using absorbance titration at 420 nm, 446 nm and the binding constants estimated follows the order F > Co > Hg > Zn. On light of this, molecular logic gate was built for CQHC's selective multi-ion detection.

The crop yields achieved through traditional plant breeding techniques appear to be nearing a plateau. Therefore, it is essential to accelerate advancements in photosynthesis, the fundamental process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy, to further enhance crop yields. Research focused on improving photosynthesis holds significant promise for increasing sustainable agricultural productivity and addressing challenges related to global food security.
