Owl (Aotus sp.) and squirrel (Saimiri sp.) monkeys are used frequently in malaria vaccine trials, during which the animals are monitored daily for parasitemia and general well-being. Every 2 weeks, blood samples are taken, and hematology and chemistries are performed. We examined 97 cases of malarial infection in owl and squirrel monkeys, whose parasitemia increased by. 22,000 parasites/uL daily during a 14-day interval. After malaria challenge, unprotected animals had significant changes in hematologic values. These changes could not be completely attributed to the increase in the parasite counts.

Primary head and neck mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (HN-MALT) is a rare lymphoma with unknown incidence and prognosis. We allocated HN-MALT data from the Self-Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (2000-2021) into training and validation cohorts at a 7:3 ratio. A joinpoint regression analysis was used to examine sex-specific and age-group morbidities, and independent prognostic factors were identified through multivariate Cox analysis to construct a nomogram prediction model and verify the accuracy of prediction.

POEMS syndrome (Polyneuropathy, Organomegaly, Endocrinopathy, Monoclonal Protein, Skin changes) is a syndrome that involves a monoclonal B-cell proliferation, most often plasmacytic, and a variable number of manifestations listed or not in the acronym. These manifestations include sclerotic bone lesions, plasmacytic Castleman disease, papillary edema, peripheral edema, ascites, thrombocytosis and/or polycythemia, venous and/or arterial thrombosis, and renal, pulmonary, and cardiac impairments . Diagnosis is often delayed due to the rarity of this entity and its clinical polymorphism, which can mimic other neurological disorders.
