Published: October 2002

Introduction: The adenoid cystic carcinoma or cylindroma of the nasopharynx is a rare tumour characterised by its slow progression, high risk of local recurrence and prolonged survival, even in the locally advanced and/or metastatic forms. Treatment is pluridisciplinary.

Observation: In a 30 year-old man consulting for right retroauricular pain, hypoacousia and epistaxis, diagnosis of a nasopharyngeal cylindroma was made in 1994. Treatment consisted first line surgery combined with loco-regional radiotherapy. Twenty-six months after complete remission had been obtained, a loco-regional relapse was revealed, combined with pulmonary metastases. The treatment combining radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy led to the stabilisation of the disease.

Comments: The adenoid cystic carcinoma of the nasopharynx a rare neoplasia of the head and neck, characterised by its slow progression over time, a high risk of relapse and the progression of metastases at distance. The corner stone of its therapeutic management is surgery. Radiotherapy improves the local control of the disease and chemotherapy is helpful in treating the metastatic disease.

Background & Objectives: Differentiation of histologic subtypes of appendiceal mucoceles may prove to be difficult on computed tomography (CT). The main objective of this study was to identify the CT features of mucocele of the appendix and correlate the imaging findings with histopathology in inflammatory, benign, and malignant neoplastic lesions, and whether these entities can be accurately differentiated on CT imaging.

Materials And Methods: CT scans of 31 patients with diagnosis of appendiceal mucocele were retrospectively reviewed and compared with histopathology.

Malignant transformation is a rare complication of ovarian mature cystic teratoma that occurs in 1-3% of cases. We herein report a case of squamous cell carcinoma originating from mature cystic teratoma of the ovary diagnosed 10 years after initial tumor detection. A 69-year-old woman presented to the Department of Internal Medicine with a seven-month history of abdominal fullness.

Background: Clear cell ovarian carcinoma (CCOC) is a type of epithelial ovarian cancer, representing 5-11% of ovarian cancers. CCOCs tend to occur in the fifth to seventh decades of life, with only 10% of cases occurring in the fourth decade. On the other side, papillary thyroid carcinoma is the most common histology type of thyroid carcinoma and is associated with locoregional spread.

Background: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor that accounts for <1 % of head and neck malignancies, with an estimated involvement of the tongue at approximately 3 %.

Case Presentation: This report presents a case of a 42-year-old male with no significant history of tobacco or alcohol use, who developed a painless, progressively enlarging mass on the ventral surface of his tongue over the course of eight months. Initial surgical resection confirmed the diagnosis of ACC, which necessitated a right hemiglossectomy followed by radiotherapy to address potential residual disease.

Salivary gland carcinomas encompass a broad group of malignant lesions characterized by varied prognoses. Stem cells have been associated with the potential for self-renewal and differentiation to various subpopulations, resulting in histopathological variability and diverse biological behavior, features that characterize salivary gland carcinomas. This study aims to provide a thorough systematic review of immunohistochemical studies regarding the expression and prognostic significance of stem cell markers between different malignant salivary gland tumors (MSGTs).
