Portable smartphone-based RecJf exonuclease-modulated enhanced ratiometric fluorescence bioplatform for rapid visual detection of As.

Food Chem

October 2024

Department of Food Science & Technology, School of Agriculture and Biology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 800 Dongchuan Road, Minhang District, Shanghai 200240, China. Electronic address:

Arsenite (As), a highly carcinogenic heavy metal ion and widely distributed in nature, can have serious health implications even with minimal exposure. Herein, a portable smartphone device-based ratiometric fluorescence platform was established for sensitive detection of As. The work relied on the use of metal-organic framework-tagged cDNA (PCN-224-cDNA), with high adsorption capability and fluorescence properties, as an internal reference to quench the fluorescence of FAM-anchored aptamer (FAM-Apt) via hybridization.

Background: Digital health interventions can be effective for blood pressure (BP) control, but a comparison of the effectiveness and application of these types of interventions has not yet been systematically evaluated in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of digital health interventions according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) classifications of patients in terms of BP control, lifestyle behaviour changes, and adherence to medication in patients with hypertension in LMICs.

Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library databases for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published in English, comprised of adults (≥18 years old) with hypertension and the intervention consisted of digital health interventions according to WHO's classifications for patients in LMICs between January 1, 2009, and July 17, 2023.

Introduction: Countries in the WHO's African region have found community-based surveillance useful in ensuring the effectiveness of the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response strategy. This approach encourages community participation in the surveillance system, in addition to early detection of outbreaks and other health threats. Thus, advancements in mobile health have the potential to improve community-based surveillance in Africa.

The icope Intrinsic Capacity Screening Tool: Measurement Structure and Predictive Validity of Dependence and Hospitalization.

J Nutr Health Aging

November 2023

Leocadio Rodríguez-Mañas, Geriatric Department, Hospital Universitario de Getafe, Ctra de Toledo Km12,5. 28905 Getafe. Madrid, Spain, Phone number: (34) 916839360 (ext. 6412),

Objectives: To evaluate the measurement structure of the ICOPE screening tool (IST) of intrinsic capacity and to find out whether the IST as a global measure adds explanatory power over and above its domains in isolation to predict the occurrence of adverse health outcomes such as dependence and hospitalization in community-dwelling older people.

Design: Secondary analysis of a cohort study, the Toledo Study of Healthy Ageing.

Setting: Province of Toledo, Spain.

Some people claim to occasionally know who is calling them without using traditional means. Controlled experiments testing these claims report mixed results. We conducted a cross-sectional study of triads examining the accuracy of knowing who was calling using two randomly selected designs: 1) a web server randomly chose the caller before the callee's guess (telepathic/pre-selected trials), and 2) a web server randomly chose the caller after the callee's guess (precognitive/post-selected trials).
