The families of vectorial Bragg solitons existing in transversely periodic media and their stability properties are studied in detail. Two qualitatively distinct types of polarization instabilities have been found. One leads to the significant radiation transfer into nonsolitonic forms, while the other mainly redistributes energy between two soliton components.

To elucidate the thermal transport mechanisms at interfaces in micro- and nanoscale electronic devices, real-time monitoring of temperature variations at the microscopic and nanoscopic levels is crucial. Micro-nano fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been demonstrated as effective in-situ optical temperature probes for measuring local temperatures. Time-stretch dispersion Fourier transform (TS-DFT) that enables fast, continuous, single-shot measurements in optical sensing has been integrated with a micro-nano FBG probe (FBG) for local temperature sensing.

We develop a theoretical model and use it to find the band structure of such gratings. We study the interaction of a probe pulse with the Bragg grating, both within and outside of momentum gaps.

We propose superluminal solitons residing in the momentum gap (k gap) of nonlinear photonic time crystals. These gap solitons are structured as plane waves in space while being periodically self-reconstructing wave packets in time. The solitons emerge from modes with infinite group velocity causing superluminal evolution, which is the opposite of the stationary nature of the analogous Bragg gap soliton residing at the edge of an energy gap (or a spatial gap) with zero group velocity.

The temperature controlled FBG is used to optimize the group delay, whereas the Lyot filter counteracts gain narrowing in the amplifier chain. Soliton compression in a hollow core fiber (HCF) allows for access to the few-cycle pulse regime.

Nonlinear propagation in periodic media has been studied for decades, yielding demonstrations of numerous phenomena including strong temporal compression and slow light generation. Gap solitons, that propagate at frequencies inside the stopband, have been observed in optical fibres but have been elusive in photonic chips. In this manuscript, we investigate nonlinear pulse propagation in a chip-based nonlinear Bragg grating at frequencies inside the stopband and observe clear, unequivocal signatures of gap soliton propagation, including slow light, intensity-dependent transmission, intensity-dependent temporal delay and gap soliton compression.
