Purpose: To report 5 patients with a black material accumulating in the conjunctiva around the titanium peg and sleeve systems.

Methods: Retrospective small case series. The clinical features of 5 patients were reviewed. Histopathologic analysis was performed on specimens from 3 patients. Neutron activation analysis was performed on 1 sample.

Results: Five asymptomatic patients with black material accumulating in the conjunctiva at the conjunctival-titanium peg interface were evaluated. All patients had a hydroxyapatite-coated titanium sleeve with a titanium peg in position. Histopathologic analysis performed on specimens from 3 patients revealed a mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate with focal areas of a black, foreign-appearing material showing birefringence under polarized light that was predominantly intracytoplasmic. This black material did not respond to bleaching, and in 2 patients, it showed positive staining for iron (Perls method). The material from one patient was evaluated by neutron activation analysis and was found to contain titanium, aluminum, and vanadium. In 18 to 48 months of follow-up, the presence of the material did not appear to be associated with any problems.

Conclusions: The presence of a black substance accumulating in the conjunctiva around some titanium coupling posts is uncommon and appears to be without any consequence in 18 to 48 months of follow-up. Our analysis revealed this substance to be consistent with titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V).

Treatment of HIV has historically required taking daily oral antiretroviral therapy (ART). A recent alternative to daily oral ART is long-acting injectable ART with cabotegravir plus rilpivirine, administered monthly or every 2 months. The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the concept relevance and interpretability of five previously developed questions: one treatment preference question and four questions designed to assess how the emotional burden associated with HIV treatment impacts treatment preferences.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are one of the major collection points of microplastics (MPs). The MPs in influents and effluents of WWTPs were assessed for three cities on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea in the winter and spring seasons. The MP removal rate of WWTPs ranged between 71.

Purpopse: There is a gap in the current literature regarding how doula care may be implemented into existing systems in Montana to best address the needs of individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) during the perinatal period. Doulas may be particularly well positioned to reach a diverse range of patients, allowing them to feel supported and advocated for within the medical system. This study aims to illustrate the perspectives and experiences of doulas, individuals who have experienced perinatal SUDs, and maternal and mental health providers.

Asymmetric Membranes Obtained from Sulfonated HIPS Waste with Potential Application in Wastewater Treatment.

Membranes (Basel)

November 2024

CONAHCYT-Centro de Investigación Científica de Yucatán, A.C., Calle 43 No. 130, Chuburná de Hidalgo, Mérida 97200, Yucatán, Mexico.

The recovery and reuse of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) into high-value products is crucial for reducing environmental thermoplastics waste and promoting sustainable materials for various applications. In this study, asymmetric membranes obtained from sulfonated HIPS waste were used for salt and dye removals. The incorporation of sulfonic acid (-SOH) groups into HIPS waste by direct chemical sulfonation with chlorosulfonic acid (CSA), at two different concentrations, was investigated to impart antifouling properties in membranes for water treatment.

Widening of Dynamic Detection Range in Real-Time Angular-Interrogation Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor Based on Anisotropic Van Der Waals Heterojunction.

Biosensors (Basel)

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Optical Technology and Instrument for Medicine, Ministry of Education, College of Optical-Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai 200093, China.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors have experienced rapid development in recent years and have been widely applied in various fields. Angular-interrogation SPR biosensors play an important role in the field of biological detection due to their advantages of reliable results and high stability. However, angular-interrogation SPR biosensors also suffer from low detection sensitivity, poor real-time performance, and limited dynamic detection range, which seriously restricts their application and promotion.
