This study reports for the first time that leptospires are killed by H(2)O(2) and by low-molecular-weight primary granule components, which are agents normally released by neutrophils upon stimulation. Although both pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains were sensitive to H(2)O(2)-mediated killing, nonpathogenic organisms were found to be more susceptible. In addition, the killing of leptospires by H(2)O(2) was found to be independent of the presence of the neutrophil primary granule component myeloperoxidase and therefore not a consequence of halogenation reactions. We have also determined that leptospires are significantly sensitive only to primary granule components and, among those, to proteins and/or peptides of less than 30 kDa.

Background: Alveolar osteitis is a type of small-scale osteomyelitis of the alveolar bone that occurs after tooth extraction, the etiology of which remains unknown, and alternative methods are being investigated for its treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF), photobiomodulation (PBM), and Alveogyl (butamben, idoform, eugenol), which have shown success in the treatment of alveolar osteitis, with that of pentoxifylline (PTX) to determine whether PTX could be an alternative treatment for alveolar osteitis.
Methods: This study included 80 healthy volunteers diagnosed with alveolar osteitis in the extraction sockets of their mandibular first, second, and third molars.

Excitatory synapses and the actin-rich dendritic spines on which they reside are indispensable for information processing and storage in the brain. In the adult hippocampus, excitatory synapses must balance plasticity and stability to support learning and memory. However, the mechanisms governing this balance remain poorly understood.

Stress granules (SGs) are membraneless cytoplasmic compartments that form in response to stress stimuli. In these compartments, most translation factors stall, except for activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4), which is preferentially translated to ensure cell survival under stressful conditions. Cancer cells encounter various stress conditions in the tumor microenvironment during tumorigenesis; however, how they exploit the pro-survival effects of ATF4 in SGs remains unclear.

Brain neurons utilize the primary cilium as a privileged compartment to detect and respond to extracellular ligands such as Sonic hedgehog (SHH). However, cilia in cerebellar granule cell (GC) neurons disassemble during differentiation through ultrastructurally unique intermediates, a process we refer to as cilia deconstruction. In addition, mature neurons do not reciliate despite having docked centrioles.

This study aims to compare the effects and mechanisms of the standard decoction and formula granules of Paeoniae Radix Rubra in regulating the metabolism in the rat model of heat toxin and blood stasis. SD rats were randomized into control, model, standard decoction, and formula granules groups. After 14 days of administration, the rats in the latter three groups were subjected to subcutaneous injection with carrageenan and intraperitoneal injection with bacterial lipopolysaccharide for the modeling of heat toxin and blood stasis.
