The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety, efficacy and acceptability to patients of day-case septorhinoplasty. Twenty-nine patients undergoing elective septorhinoplasty in a dedicated teaching hospital day-case unit were asked to complete day surgery questionnaires (DSQ) at six weeks post-operatively. Details of surgery performed, demographic data, readmission rates and complications were collected prospectively. No major complications were recorded. One patient had to be admitted for overnight observation following post-operative bleeding. The DSQ showed that the great majority of patients were satisfied from the day-case setting (satisfaction score 81). This preliminary study showed that day surgery septorhinoplasty was acceptable to the patient and was associated with a very low re-admission rate. We believe that in carefully selected young healthy patients it is an acceptable alternative to an in-patient procedure.

Objectives: To assess and compare the safety and quality of the management of sinonasal surgery (all procedures) between day-case and traditional admission.
Material And Methods: A 2-year retrospective study included all patients undergoing functional septonasal surgery, ethmoidectomy, middle antrostomy, frontal sinusotomy or endoscopic sphenoidotomy, as day-surgery on inpatient admission. Demographic, operative, pre- and post-operative anesthetic data, complications, and rates of emergency consultation and readmission within 30 days were collected and compared between out- and in-patients.

Background: The current study was designed to assess the effect of magnesium sulphate infusion on hemodynamic parameters, neuromuscular blocking, propofol consumption, serum concentration of magnesium ions, and recovery from anesthesia during total intravenous anesthesia.
Methods: For this study, 60 patients undergoing septorhinoplasty operations were randomly allocated to receive magnesium sulphate (group M) or saline (group C) intravenously. The patients in group M received 15% magnesium sulphate 50 mg/kg in 100 ml of saline, and those in group C received an equal volume of saline before induction of anesthesia followed by 8 mg/kg/h infusion of either magnesium sulphate (group M) or an equal volume of saline (group C) until the end of surgery.

BACKGROUND: A readmission is classified as a patient necessitating readmission to hospital due to a post-operative complication following discharge. An overstay however, is classified as a patient having to stay longer than the planned duration in hospital (not having been discharged in the interim) due to a post-operative complication.
