Objective: To review our experience in surgical treatment of ascending aortic aneurysm (AAA) with aortic insufficiency in 14 cases of by Bentall's procedure.

Methods And Results: All the patients underwent replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic valve with composite valved vascular prosthesis and received direct implantation of the aortic graft of the coronary orifices (Bentall's procedure) with satisfactory results. Five patients had ascending aortic dissection and 4 had typical Marfan's syndrome. All the patients suffered severe aortic insufficiency while 2 had mitral insufficiency. Coronary orifices were implanted in situ in 13 cases while in 1 case, Cabrol's method was adopted. No death occurred during the surgery and in the subsequent follow-up, and all the patients had good recovery.

Conclusion: Bentall's procedure can be effective in the treatment of AAA with aortic insufficiency.

Background: Individuals harbouring pathogenic variants are at risk for aneurysms/dissections throughout the arterial tree. Based on prior reports of sex differences in thoracic aortic aneurysm/dissection, we investigated the sexual dimorphism for vascular events in variant-harbouring patients.

Methods: We analysed two large pedigrees comprising 84 individuals segregating pathogenic missense variants affecting the same p.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the differences between smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from two lineages in the proximal thoracic aorta, specifically the second heart field (SHF) and cardiac neural crest.
  • Researchers used advanced techniques like single-cell RNA sequencing and chromatin accessibility assays to analyze these cells in male mice, identifying distinct gene expressions in both lineages.
  • Findings reveal that SHF-derived SMCs have unique transcriptomic profiles that may influence their functions in thoracic aortic diseases, suggesting lineage-specific roles in vascular health.

Aortic aneurysms and dissections (AAD) cause more than 10,000 deaths in the United States each year. However, there are no medications that can effectively prevent the pathogenesis of AAD. MER proto-oncogene tyrosine kinase (MerTK) is a key receptor for efferocytosis, a process for the clearance of apoptotic cells.

Purpose: It has been demonstrated that the coronary artery anomalies (CAAs) are generally asymptomatic. However, some cases can cause severe life threatening events. As coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) has emerged as a non-invasive alternative to invasive coronary angiography for the evaluation of coronary anatomy, the prevalence of CAAs in CCTA may more closely reflect the true prevalence in the general population.
