Three salen-Mn(II) complexes bearing hydroxyl groups in either the ortho, para or meta positions have been synthesized and the structures of the metal complexes and their potential to produce free radicals investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) and X-ray absorption near edge structures (XANES) spectroscopy. All three compounds were shown to generate a high level of superoxide anions in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution. The production of oxygen radicals results from a one electron process oxidation of Mn(II) species leading to the formation Mn(III) redox state species, as revealed by a higher XANES edge energy of 2.7 eV. The formation of superoxide anion was characterized by ESR, both directly and via the use of a spin-trapping method. Under reductive condition in the presence of ascorbic acid, the reduction of Mn(III) to Mn(II) leads to the production of hydroxyl radicals by the ortho and para compounds. The efficient production O(2)*- by such salen-Mn complexes could be useful to evaluate the scavenging properties of antioxidant molecules.

As a graphene-like material, h-BN has stimulated great research interest recently due to its potential application for next-generation electronic devices. Herein, a systematic theoretical investigation of electronic structures and optical properties of C-doped and Cu-Al co-doped h-BN is carried out by the first-principles calculations. Firstly, two different C-doped h-BN structures for the para-position and ortho-position are constructed.

Dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) are emerging as a powerful, next-generation approach to designing applied ILs because of their superior physicochemical properties as well as their diverse complexity and tunability for task specific applications. DILs are scarce in the literature compared to monocationic ILs (MILs), and one of their main issues is their expected tendency to possess higher melting temperatures. A series of 1,4-bis[2-(4-pyridyl)ethenyl] benzene and 1,4-bis[2-(2-pyridyl)ethenyl]benzene quaternary salts (Q-BPEBs) with different counterions (bromide, tosylate, and triflimide) and carbon chain lengths (C, C, and C) have been synthesized for their potential as DILs with strong photoluminescent properties in the solid state.

The aim of the research was to determine the impact of the use of biostimulators and different nitrogen doses on the yield quality of two varieties of corn grown for grain. The field experiment was carried out in 2015-2017 on an individual farm located in north-eastern Poland (52°30'N and 22°26'E). The following factors were examined in the experiment: group I-two corn varieties: PR38N86 (280 FAO); P8400 (240 FAO) group II-four doses of nitrogen fertilization: control treatment-without nitrogen application (0 kg·ha-1 N) nitrogen doses-80 kg·ha-1 N, 120 kg·ha-1 N, 160 kg·ha-1 N, group III-four types of biostimulators used: (1) control treatment-without the use of a biostimulator, (2) biostimulator containing sodium ortho-nitrophenol, sodium para-nitrophenol, 5-nitroguaiacol sodium, (3) biostimulator containing potassium para-nitrophenolate, potassium ortho-nitrophenolate, potassium 5-nitrovacollate, (4) biostimulator containing molybdenum, zinc.

Spectra of the weakly bound H2O-O2 dimer are studied in the region of the H2O ν2 band using a tunable quantum cascade laser to probe a pulsed supersonic slit jet expansion. These are the first gas-phase infrared spectra of H2O-O2 and among only a few such results for O2-containing complexes. Almost 100 infrared lines are assigned based on the ground state combination differences from the microwave spectrum of H2O-O2.

A new Co 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2',6'-dipivaloyloxyphenyl)porphyrin (1) with eight ester groups in all and ' positions of phenyl groups was designed, which displayed significantly improved 2e oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) selectivity compared with a 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(-dipivaloyloxyphenyl) porphyrin (2) without large steric groups. This work is significant to reveal the steric hindrance effect of metal porphyrins on electrocatalytic ORR selectivity.
