Since its discovery more than a decade ago, the Ser/Thr kinase Akt/PKB (protein kinase B) has been recognized as being remarkably well conserved across a broad range of species and involved in a diverse array of cellular processes. Among its many roles, Akt appears to be common to signaling pathways that mediate the metabolic effects of insulin in several physiologically important target tissues. Refining our understanding of those pivotal molecular components that normally coordinate insulin action throughout the body is essential for a full understanding of insulin resistance in diabetes mellitus and ultimately the successful treatment of this disease.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy can cause congenital Zika virus syndrome (CZV), including fetal growth restriction and death. In the developing placenta, trophoblast cells respond to epidermal growth factor (EGF) to migrate into the decidua to facilitate implantation and fetal development. EGF activates the Akt protein kinase, a master regulator of trophoblast cell migration.

BRG1 has been found to promote the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) by regulating epigenetic modifications or binding to transcription factors, however, the role of BRG1 on the cellular metabolism during reprogramming has not been reported. In this study, we found that BRG1 improved the efficiency of porcine iPSC generation, and upregulated the expression of pluripotency-related factors. Further analysis revealed that BRG1 promoted cellular glycolysis, and increased levels of glycolysis-related metabolites.
