The effects of normal, low and high plasma concentrations of 1,25-(OH)2vitamin D (1,25-(OH)2D) combined with normal, low and high concentrations of plasma calcium on renal calbindin-D28k and intestinal calbindin-D9k were examined in rats. We found that the expression of renal calbindin-D28k was significantly (P<0.05) increased by high levels of 1,25-(OH)2D, but was not affected by a 50% reduction in 1,25-(OH)2D. In contrast the intestinal calbindin-D9k responded significantly (P<0.005) to both high and low 1,25-(OH)2D levels. The effect of 1,25-(OH)2D on intestinal calbindin-D9k was modulated by plasma calcium concentrations. Increased plasma calcium levels did not affect the renal calbindin-D28k concentrations, but suppressed intestinal calbindin-D9k (P<0.05). The effect of calcium was not mediated by calciotropic hormones. This suggests the existence of a calcium-sensing mechanism in the proximal duodenum. It is concluded that intestinal calbindin-D9k is more sensitive than renal calbindin-D28k to changes in 1,25-(OH)2D and that intestinal calbindin-D9k in contrast to renal calbindin-D28k is sensitive to changes in plasma calcium concentrations.

Phosphorus metabolism in laying hens is a highly dynamic process over the course of the 24 h egg-laying cycle. Adjusting the phosphorus feeding regimen according to the daily egg-laying cycle may help to improve phosphorus utilization efficiency. Hy-Line Brown layers ( = 120; 70 wk old) were offered 4 different phosphorus daily regimens: (1) RR, fed regular phosphorus at both 09:00 and 17:00; (2) RL, fed regular phosphorus at 09:00 and low phosphorus at 17:00; (3) LR, fed low phosphorus at 09:00 and regular phosphorus at 17:00; (4) LL, fed low phosphorus at both 09:00 and 17:00.

This study aimed to provide the performance, localization and expression of the epithelial calcium transporter channels Calbindin-D28k (Calb) and TRPV6, and of the morphology of the digestive and reproductive system of laying quail under heat stress (HS), and with methionine supplementation (MS). This study characterized the positivity (immunohistochemistry) and expression (real-time PCR) of calcium channels in the kidneys, intestine and uterus of 504 laying quails under different MS (100, 110 and 120%) and temperatures (20, 24, 28 and 32°C). The animals under HS (32°C) had lower villus height, villus:crypt ratio, and goblet cell index in the duodenum and jejunum, fewer secondary and tertiary uterine folds, smaller hepatic steatosis, and increased number of distal convoluted renal tubules (CT) positive to Calb, and increased positivity in proximal CTs.
