Magnetic compounds are known to enhance water proton relaxation, either by diffusion or by proton exchange. An experimental procedure to distinguish both mechanisms is proposed and validated by relaxation measurements made in water-methanol solutions of Dy(3+), Ni(2+), Gd(3+), Tempo, and AMI-25. The test discriminates according to the character of the transverse relaxation in water-methanol solutions: a mono-exponential decay corresponds to diffusion, while a bi-exponential decay indicates the contribution of a proton exchange. The study of ferritin and akaganeite particle solutions confirms the occurrence of a proton exchange between protons belonging to hydroxyl groups of the particle surface and free water protons.
Nano-sized high-entropy materials (HEMs) recently received more attention to researchers due to their superior electrochemical catalytic properties. HEMs comprise at least five elements with or without metals and are synthesized through solid-state reactions and solution-mediated techniques. The presence of many elements in these HEMs result in a high mixing entropy and facilitates the formation of stable solid solutions in fundamental crystal structures.
Acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has long been the bottleneck of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. Ru- and Ir-based oxides are currently state-of-the-art electrocatalysts for acidic OER, but their high cost limits their widespread application. CoO is a promising alternative, yet the performance requires further improvement.
In alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP) flooding systems, alkalis react with clay minerals such as Illite, montmorillonite, and kaolinite, leading to reservoir damage and impacting oil recovery rates. Therefore, studying the dissolution effects of strong alkalis on clay minerals is crucial for improving oil recovery. This study uses Illite as a representative clay mineral and employs the ReaxFF reactive force field and molecular dynamics simulations to model its dissolution in NaOH solution.
The development of efficient and stable proton conductors is a pivotal area of research due to their transformative potential in alternative energy technologies. Recently, there has been a surge of interest in synthesizing proton conductors based on polyoxometalate (POM) materials, attributed to their highly negatively charged and oxygen-rich surfaces. In this study, we report on a highly water-soluble giant POM, (NH)[MoO(CHCOO)(HO)]·300HO·10CHCOONH (designated as {Mo}), which was rendered insoluble in water by exchanging its ammonium cations with larger organic cations, specifically histidinium, pyridinium, bipyridinium, and methyl viologen, resulting in His-Mo132, Py-Mo132, Bpy-Mo132 and MV-Mo132, respectively.
Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis faces challenges associated with high overpotential and acidic environments, which pose significant hurdles in developing highly active and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Ir-based nanomaterials are considered promising OER catalysts for PEM due to their favorable intrinsic activity and stability under acidic conditions. However, their high cost and limited availability pose significant limitations.
