Objective: The study goals were to predict postoperative normocalcemia and hypocalcemia after total thyroidectomy using calcium levels and to assess the value of a standardized protocol in managing the total thyroidectomy patient.

Study Design: We conducted a prospective study encompassing 68 patients undergoing a total thyroidectomy using a standardized protocol. Blood to measure postoperative calcium levels was drawn at 6, 12, and 20 hours and then twice daily thereafter. Calcium slope was calculated from the 6- and 12-hour serum corrected calcium levels.

Results: Logistic regression analysis allowed the comparison of the 6- and 12-hour calcium slope versus proportion of normocalcemic patients postoperatively. A slope of +0.02 had a 97% chance of remaining normocalcemic (p = 0.0007).

Conclusion: Successful prediction of calcium status post total thyroidectomy can be achieved using the slope of the 6- and 12-hour calcium levels. The risk of developing severe hypocalcemia can also be predicted with these slope values. Implementation of the protocol resulted in a significant reduction in the duration of hospital stay for patients who remain normocalcemic.

Background: Bok is a poorly characterized Bcl-2 protein family member with roles yet to be clearly defined. It is clear, however, that Bok binds strongly to inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP) receptors (IPRs), which govern the mobilization of Ca from the endoplasmic reticulum, a signaling pathway required for many cellular processes. Also known is that Bok has a highly conserved phosphorylation site for cAMP-dependent protein kinase at serine-8 (Ser-8).

Background: Haemorrhage remains the leading cause of preventable mortality following trauma, often aggravated by the acidosis, hypothermia and coagulopathy-the lethal triad of trauma. However, the impact of trauma-induced hypocalcemia on the haemorrhage remains unclear. It is intuitive to consider perturbations of ionised calcium early during trauma resuscitation in acutely injured patients given its pathophysiological significance for an improved outcome.

Sterile alpha and Toll/interleukin-1 receptor motif containing 1 (SARM1), a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-utilizing enzyme, mediates axon degeneration (AxD) in various neurodegenerative diseases. It is activated by nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) to produce a calcium messenger, cyclic ADP-ribose (cADPR). This activity is blocked by elevated NAD level.

Background And Aims: The interaction of serum uric acid (SUA) with atherogenesis is incompletely understood. Aim of our study was to investigate the association of SUA levels with coronary plaque composition including high-risk-plaque (HRP) features by coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) and for the prediction of major adverse cardiac events (MACE).

Methods And Results: 1242 patients (age 66.

Aims: Hyperglycaemic conditions increase cardiac stress, a common phenomenon associated with inflammation, aging, and metabolic imbalance. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, a class of anti-diabetic drugs, showed to improve cardiovascular functions although their mechanism of action has not yet been fully established. This study investigated the effects of empagliflozin on cardiomyocytes following high glucose exposure, specifically focusing on inflammatory and metabolic responses.
