An algorithmic synthesis of the deterministic and stochastic paradigms via computer intensive methods.

In this paper, an approach to synthesizing the deterministic and stochastic paradigms, via computer intensive methods, is presented within the framework of a stochastic model of a HIV/AIDS epidemic in a population of homosexuals. Because of dependence among members of a population, the problem of determining threshold conditions was approached by systematically embedding a system of differential equations in a stochastic process and determining if the Jacobian matrix of this system is stable or not stable, when evaluated at a disease free equilibrium. It has been shown in numerous Monte Carlo simulation experiments that if this matrix is not stable, then an epidemic will develop in a population with positive probability, following the introduction of infectives into a population of susceptibles. This technique was used to search for points in the parameter space such that an epidemic would develop in a population of susceptibles, following the entrance of one or more infectious recruits during any time interval with small probability. Such recurrent rare events are of interest in the studying the emergence of new diseases, involving the transmission of a virus from a species that has evolved resistance to it to another species that lacks resistance.

Microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and protists, are key drivers in aquatic ecosystems, maintaining ecological balance and normal material circulation, playing vital roles in ecosystem functions and biogeochemical processes. To evaluate the environmental impact of different river crab polyculture practices, we set up two different river crab () polyculture practices: one where river crabs were cultured with mandarin fish (), silver carp (), and freshwater fish stone moroko (), and another where river crabs were cultured just with mandarin fish and silver carp. These two polyculture practices were referred to as PC and MC, respectively.

Stacking fermentation is critical in sauce-flavor production, but winter production often sees abnormal fermentations, like Waistline and Sub-Temp fermentation, affecting yield and quality. This study used three machine learning models (Logistic Regression, KNN, and Random Forest) combined with multi-omics (metagenomics and flavoromics) to develop a classification model for abnormal fermentation. SHAP analysis identified 13 Sub-Temp Fermentation and 9 Waistline microbial biomarkers, along with 9 Sub-Temp Fermentation and 12 Waistline flavor biomarkers.

To address the challenge of antibiotic-containing wastewater, a novel micromagnetic carrier-modified integrated fixed-film activated sludge system (MC-IFAS) was developed for treating tetracycline (TC)-containing swine wastewater in this study. The magnetic effects of the MC significantly enhanced TC removal by improving TC biosorption and biodegradation in both the suspended activated sludge and the carrier-attached biofilm in the MC-IFAS. The increased electrostatic attraction and number of binding sites in both the activated sludge and the biofilm enhanced their TC biosorption capacities, particularly in the activated sludge.
