Objective: To evaluate the possibility of using the technique of CO2 supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) combined with molecular distillation (MD) to extract, separate and purify the volatile components of Ligusticum wallichii Franch, a Chinese herbal medicine.
Methods: SFE was employed to extract the volatile components of Ligusticum wallichii Franch, followed by MD of the product. Analysis of the chemical constituents of the extract both before and after MD was performed with gas chromatography (GC) in conjunction with mass spectrography (MS).
Results: There were 45 kinds of chemical constituents in the extract of Ligusticum wallichii Franch yielded from SFE, among which 39 were left after distillation by MD. Changes also took place in the content of the constituents in the extract after distillation.
Conclusions: SFE combined with MD, a technique better than simple SFE, can be used to extract, separate and purify the volatile components of Chinese herbs.

The relationship between the gut microbiota (GM) and the health of human beings has been a topic of growing interest in the last few years. Legumes are a rich source of indigestible carbohydrates, including resistant starch (RS), which are substrates of the GM. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the indigestible fraction of legumes on the fecal microbiota of normal-weight (NW) and obese (O) donors.

In this study, raw milk was collected from three different grades of pastures and processed by pasteurization, blending and ultra-high temperature sterilization (UHT) in a factory production line with a feed size of 10 tons. Additionally, all samples (from raw milk to UHT milk samples) were analyzed by -nose and GC-MS. Key flavor compounds such as 2-heptanone, hexanal, nonanal, 3-methyl-butanal, and dimethyl sulfide were found.

Sweetpotato with different flesh colors exhibits significant differences in flavor. Nevertheless, research on the identification of the key aromatic compounds in sweetpotato is scarce. Therefore, 40 primary sweetpotato varieties with different flesh colors were analyzed by HS-SPME/GC-MS to characterize the volatile compounds.

Proton-transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-TOF-MS), combined with electronic nose (-nose), was first used to track the change of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in soy sauce in this study. The results showed that 163 VOCs with different mass numbers were identified. Based on the differences in VOCs, the entire fermentation cycle was divided into four stages (0D and 15D; 30D-75D; 90D; 105D-120D).

Use of desalinated seawater in arid and semiarid regions for domestic, industrial, and agricultural purposes is on the rise. Consequently, in those regions, drinking water offered to lactating cows has lower salinity and mineral concentrations than in the past. Although water with total dissolved solids (TDSs) of up to 1 000 ppm is considered safe for drinking, lower salinity level may affect rumen physiology, feed and water intake, or milk yield.
