[Adenomas of the nipple].

Published: October 2002

A case of adenoma of the nipple is reported. Although this is a comparatively rare condition, knowledge of it is extremely important because clinically it simulates Paget's disease. A failure to recognise the pathology could therefore lead to mistaken diagnosis and consequent surgery which would create serious damage to the patient. According to almost all authors, it is a benign pathology and can therefore be treated with an intervention limited to removing the complete tumour. This for two reasons: the first is that if the tumour grows it can become painful, create a sense of tension and bleed in the erosive phase; the second, more important, is that malignant degeneration has been hypothesised. For these reasons it is essential to examine the other breast immediately and follow the patient over time to prevent unpleasant surprises.

Nipple adenomas are rare benign tumors. The risk of carcinogenesis and the exact time of cancerization of nipple adenomas is unknown. We report a case of nipple adenoma in a 76-year-old Japanese woman.

Article Synopsis
  • - Nipple adenoma (NA) is a rare but benign growth in the nipple that commonly affects middle-aged women, presenting as a nodule or ulcer with potential discharge, and is often mistaken for more serious conditions like Paget’s disease or breast cancer.
  • - A study from January 2015 to December 2021 analyzed 16 cases of NA, noting a median diagnosis age of 37 years, with nipple discharge and swelling as primary symptoms; ultrasound revealed lesions averaging 0.8 cm, and most cases showed an adenosis histological pattern.
  • - The findings highlight that histopathological analysis, aided by immunohistochemistry, is essential for accurate diagnosis, while surgical excision remains the preferred treatment,

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to distinguish between isolated pituitary hyperplasia (IPH) and primary hypothyroidism with a nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma (PHCNFPA) in patients with high thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and sellar masses to prevent unnecessary surgeries.
  • Using a retrospective analysis of patients with TSH >50 µIU/ml from 2020-2022, researchers examined MRI results, symptoms, and other clinical data to categorize patients into IPH or PHCNFPA.
  • Results indicated a significant age difference between the two groups, with IPH patients presenting at a younger age, while PHCNFPA patients showed more severe symptoms and larger pituitary lesions; unique imaging features helped in differentiating
