Decay of the Loschmidt echo for quantum states with sub-planck-scale structures.

Published: October 2002

Quantum states extended over a large volume in phase space have oscillations from quantum interferences in their Wigner distribution on scales smaller than variant Planck's over 2pi [W. H. Zurek, Nature (London) 412, 712 (2001)]]. We investigate the influence of those sub-Planck-scale structures on the sensitivity to an external perturbation of the state's time evolution. While we do find an accelerated decay of the Loschmidt Echo for an extended state in comparison to a localized wave packet, the acceleration is described entirely by the classical Lyapunov exponent and hence cannot originate from quantum interference.

We exploit the properties of complex time to obtain an analytical relationship based on considerations of causality between the two Noether-conserved quantities of a system: its Hamiltonian and its entropy production. In natural units, when complexified, the one is simply the Wick-rotated complex conjugate of the other. A Hilbert transform relation is constructed in the formalism of quantitative geometrical thermodynamics, which enables system irreversibility to be handled analytically within a framework that unifies both the microscopic and macroscopic scales, and which also unifies the treatment of both reversibility and irreversibility as complementary parts of a single physical description.

Mathematical Models for Unstable Quantum Systems and Gamow States.

We review some results in the theory of non-relativistic quantum unstable systems. We account for the most important definitions of quantum resonances that we identify with unstable quantum systems. Then, we recall the properties and construction of Gamow states as vectors in some extensions of Hilbert spaces, called Rigged Hilbert Spaces.

Numerical renormalization group study of the Loschmidt echo in Kondo systems.

We study the dynamical properties of the one-channel and two-channel spin-1/2 Kondo models after quenching in Hamiltonian variables. Eigen spectrum of the initial and final Hamiltonians is calculated by using the numerical renormalization group method implemented within the matrix product states formalism. We consider multiple quench protocols in the considered Kondo systems, also in the presence of external magnetic field of different intensities.

We show that the most important measures of quantum chaos, such as frame potentials, scrambling, Loschmidt echo and out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs), can be described by the unified framework of the isospectral twirling, namely the Haar average of a -fold unitary channel. We show that such measures can then always be cast in the form of an expectation value of the isospectral twirling. In literature, quantum chaos is investigated sometimes through the spectrum and some other times through the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian generating the dynamics.

Perturbation Independent Decay of the Loschmidt Echo in a Many-Body System.

Phys Rev Lett

Facultad de Matemática, Astronomía, Física y Computación-Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Córdoba X5000HUA, Argentina.

When a qubit or spin interacts with others under a many-body Hamiltonian, the information it contains progressively scrambles. Here, nuclear spins of an adamantane crystal are used as a quantum simulator to monitor such dynamics through out-of-time-order correlators, while a Loschmidt echo (LE) asses how weak perturbations degrade the information encoded in these increasingly complex states. Both observables involve the implementation of a time-reversal procedure which, in practice, involves inverting the sign of the effective Hamiltonian.
