The scientific community is becoming increasingly concerned about the recent detection of transformation products (TPs) of antimicrobials (AMs) and their presence in the food chain. There are growing concerns about the potential consequences on food safety and the proliferation of antimicrobial resistance. In this work, the transformation process of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and oxytetracycline (OTC) in soil was thoroughly evaluated.

Antibiotics as emerging pollutants are frequently detected in surface water, raising concerns about the associated risk of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Despite the widespread apprehension, there are still research gaps in the occurrence of antibiotic pollution in surface water and the associated ecological risks to aquatic organisms in China. Here, we established a dataset of antibiotic pollution in surface water in China during 2018-2022, which encompassed 3 368 concentration values of 128 antibiotics reported in 124 articles.

Microplastics and antibiotics coexist in aquatic environments, especially in freshwater aquaculture areas. However, as the second largest production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in the world, the effects of co-exposure to microplastics particles and antibiotics on changes in antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) profiles and the microbial community structure of aquatic organism gut microorganisms are poorly understood. Therefore, in this study, carp (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to single or combined PVC microplastic contamination and oxytetracycline (OTC) or sulfamethazine (SMZ) for 8 weeks.

Antibiotic contamination in soil has become a major concern worldwide. At present, it is not clear how two co-existed antibiotics with environmentally relevant concentrations would affect soil bacterial community structure, the abundances of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and functional genes, and whether the effects of antibiotics would differ between rhizosphere and bulk soil. We conducted a greenhouse pot experiment to grow maize in a loess soil treated with oxytetracycline (OTC) or sulfadiazine (SDZ) or both at an environmentally relevant concentration (1 mg kg) to investigate the effects of OTC and SDZ on the rhizosphere and bulk soil bacterial communities, abundances of ARGs and carbon (C)-, nitrogen (N)-, and phosphorus (P)-cycling functional genes, and on plant growth and plant N and P nutrition.

This study enhanced our understanding of antibiotic mixtures' occurrence, transformation, toxicity, and ecological risks. The role of acid-modified biochar (BC) in treating antibiotic residues was explored, shedding light on how BC influences the fate, mobility, and environmental impact of antibiotics and transformation products (TPs) in an activated sludge (AS) microbiome. A mixture of oxytetracycline and sulfamethoxazole was found to synergistically (or additively) inhibit cell growth of AS and disrupt the microbiome structure, species richness/diversity, and function.
