Germanium is electrodeposited in a template formed from a dried suspension of silica spheres. The germanium completely fills the pores of the silica matrix. The semiconductor, as deposited, is amorphous but can be crystallized by annealing. Selective dissolution of the silica template gives a macroporous germanium-air sphere matrix, which offers interesting possibilities for photonic applications.

Among the germanium-based compounds, GeTe is a promising anode candidate that exhibits high theoretical capacity (856 mAh g vs Li/Li and 401 mAh g vs Na/Na) and low volume expansion during an ion intercalation/deintercalation process. Nevertheless, achieving good dispersion of metal-like GeTe in anode materials remains a significant challenge. Herein, hybrid GeTe/graphene (GeTe/G) is proposed as a highly efficient anode for LiBs and SiBs by facile ball milling.

High, nearly 100%, yield synthesis of ammonium peroxogermanate (APG), (NH)[Ge(μ-OO)(μ-O)(OH)]·6HO, is presented, and its crystal structure is determined by single crystal X-ray study. It comprises centrosymmetric hexanuclear peroxogermanate anions [Ge(μ-OO)(μ-O)(OH)] with six μ-oxo- and six μ-peroxo groups forming negatively charged layers. The space between these layers is filled by ammonium cations and water molecules, forming a highly stable structure due to hydrogen bonding.

Three dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) Ge films have been made via ordered polystyrene (PS) templates by electrodeposition from ionic liquids 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide and 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tris (pentafluoroethyl) trifluorophosphate at room temperature. We discuss the possibility of obtaining high quality 3DOM Ge films from two different ionic liquids by the simple and inexpensive template-assisted electrochemical pathway. Scanning electron microscopy confirms the quality of the samples, and the optical measurements demonstrate that 3DOM Ge made electrochemically shows photonic crystal behavior.

Recently we reported our results on the successful synthesis of 3-D highly ordered macroporous (3DOM) structure of germanium via the template-assisted electrochemical deposition from air- and water stable ionic liquids. Herein we report our new results on the photoluminescence (PL) properties of the obtained ordered macroporous Ge and the Ge/polystyrene composite opal structure. The latter showed a strong green emission compared to a Ge film and a Ge inverse opal.

A promising method for the production of germanium photonic crystals consists of electrodeposition of Ge from GeCl(4)-containing ionic liquids inside templates of polystyrene colloidal crystals and subsequent removal of the template. This room-temperature method gives rise to the fabrication of a three-dimensional highly ordered macroporous germanium nanostructure (see picture; scale: 2 microm) as a prototype of a photonic crystal.
