Introduction: Access to electric light has exposed living organisms to varying intensities of light throughout the 24 h day. Dim light at night (DLAN) is an inappropriate signal for the biological clock, which is responsible for the circadian organization of physiology. Perception, a cognitive construct, emerges through sensorimotor integration (SMI). The genetic mechanisms that shape SMI required for perception are unknown. Here, we demonstrate in mice that expression of the autism/intellectual disability gene, Syngap1, in cortical excitatory neurons is required for the formation of somatomotor networks that promote SMI-mediated perception.

Studies on the mechanisms and regulation of functional assemblies of SNARE proteins mediating membrane fusion essentially make use of recombinant proteins and artificial phospholipid bilayers. We have developed an easy-to-use in vivo system reconstituting membrane fusion in living bacteria. It relies on the formation of caveolin-dependent intracytoplasmic cisternae followed by the controlled synthesis of members of the synaptic SNARE machinery.

With the recent rise in the rate of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in women, the historical gap between men and women living with this condition is narrowing. While there are many commonalities in how men and women are impacted by AUD, an accumulating body of evidence is revealing sex-dependent adaptations that may require distinct therapeutic approaches. Preclinical rodent studies are beginning to shed light on sex differences in the effects of chronic alcohol exposure on synaptic activity in a number of brain regions.

Aim: Octopamine in the Drosophila brain has a neuromodulatory role similar to that of noradrenaline in mammals. After release from Tdc2 neurons, octopamine/tyramine may trigger intracellular Ca signaling via adrenoceptor-like receptors on neural cells, modulating neurotransmission. Octopamine/tyramine receptors are expressed in neurons and glia, but how each of these cell types responds to octopamine remains elusive.
