Biopsy material obtained from the first portion of the jejunum of 56 unselected diabetics and 21 normal controls was examined under the electron microscope (in 8 cases) or with a method of stereologic morphometry. Controls were found to have a villous volume (VVi) of 50.19 +/- 10.1%. All values below 40% were interpreted as an expression of deterioration of the mucous membrane. Altogether 12.5% of the diabetics showed total atrophy, and 20% had significant reduction of VVi. These changes did not correlate with intestinal disorders or other signs of diabetes. In total atrophy histochemical changes could be demonstrated. Microangiopathy was not observed in the intestinal mucosa.

Introduction: Soft tissue lesions encompass a diverse category of diseases from benign to malignant, and their morphology might overlap; therefore, accurate categorization is needed to approach the reporting of soft tissue cytology. The cytology of these lesions is helpful in detecting the features of malignancy, which helps in guiding further management. In this study, we applied the proposed IAC-IARC-WHO cytopathology system to assess the risk of malignancy (ROM) and diagnostic accuracy (DA) for the determination of its clinical and diagnostic utility.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has emerged as a very consequential issue threatening human life and health; therefore, research on its pathogenesis is urgently needed. A prior investigation discovered a significant elevation in the phosphoglycerate mutase 5 (PGAM5) expression in the lung tissue of COPD smoking patients. This rise in expression is closely associated with COPD severity.

Objective: To assess the frequency of unrecognized myocardial infarction and identify additional ischemic conditions, as well as to evaluate the efficacy of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) in risk groups, comparing the imaging findings with electro-cardiographic (ECG) and laboratory data in patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease, also known as end-stage renal disease.
Materials And Methods: This was a prospective single-center study involving 20 patients who were referred to our radiology department to undergo CMRI between June 2010 and December 2011. Resting left ventricular functions and (early and late) myocardial contrast enhancement were assessed in all patients.

Introduction: Laser refractive surgeries are a safe option for low-to-moderate refractive corrections, providing excellent visual outcomes. Over the years, various procedures have been introduced into clinical practice, but the most performed today remain Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Laser Keratomileusis (LASIK), and Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE). Although laser refractive treatments are considered safe, clinicians have focused on the risk of post-surgical ectasia, a rare but serious complication.

Fluorescence navigation is a novel technique for accurately identifying hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) lesions during hepatectomy, enabling real-time visualization. Indocyanine green-based fluorescence guidance has been commonly used to demarcate HCC lesion boundaries, but it cannot distinguish between benign and malignant liver tumors. This review focused on the clinical applications and limitations of indocyanine green, as well as recent advances in novel fluorescent probes for fluorescence-guided surgery of HCC.
