January 2025

School of Government of Beijing Normal University, 19 Xinjiekou Wai St. Beijing, 100875, PR China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to investigate the link between early onset of menstruation (menarche) and depression through a meta-analysis involving 22 studies with nearly 88,000 participants.
  • Results showed that participants with early menarche had significantly higher depression scores and incidence compared to those without early menarche, although there was moderate variability among the studies included.
  • The findings suggest that early menarche is correlated with increased depression risk, highlighting the need for supportive measures from parents, schools, and healthcare providers for girls who experience menarche earlier.

  • They studied about 800,000 women and found over a thousand genetic signals that influence when menstruation starts.
  • Some women have a much higher chance of starting their periods too early or too late based on their genetic makeup, suggesting that genes play a big role in this process!
