Background: Patients receiving intraoperative ventilation during general anesthesia often have low end-tidal CO (etCO). We examined the association of intraoperative etCO levels with the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in a conveniently-sized international, prospective study named 'Local ASsessment of Ventilatory management during General Anesthesia for Surgery' (LAS VEGAS).
Methods: Patients at high risk of PPCs were categorized as 'low etCO' or 'normal to high etCO' patients, using a cut-off of 35 mmHg.

Mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative disorders, including progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). PSP is a Parkinsonian syndrome characterized by a rapidly progressive state that manifests itself as tremors, bradykinesia, and supranuclear gaze palsy. Carnitine plays an essential role in mitochondrial function by transporting fatty acids across the mitochondrial membrane to be used in energy production.

Purpose: The semiautomated carbon monoxide (CO) rebreathing method has been introduced as a noninvasive and radiation-free blood volume estimation method. We tested whether the semiautomated CO rebreathing method can detect the blood volume deficit in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). In addition, we explored the relationship between blood volume estimated from CO rebreathing and body impedance.

The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to examine if exercise training can counteract energy restriction-induced impairment of mitochondrial capacity in skeletal muscle of 55-70-years people with prediabetes and metabolic syndrome. The potential impact of sex was explored. Fifty sedentary men and women with prediabetes and metabolic syndrome (age: 61 ± 6 (±SD) years, BMI: 29.

Background: Quantification of pulmonary edema in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) by chest computed tomography (CT) scan has not been validated in routine diagnostics due to its complexity and time-consuming nature. Therefore, the single-indicator transpulmonary thermodilution (TPTD) technique to measure extravascular lung water (EVLW) has been used in the clinical setting. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have now enabled CT images of inhomogeneous lungs to be segmented automatically by an intensive care physician with no prior radiology training within a relatively short time.
