A 40-year-old pregnant woman, who suffered a continuous episode of fever and anemia since the 26th week of pregnancy, was referred to our clinic for evaluation of her left flank pain and tumor. As retroperitoneal tumor was suspected by retrograde pyelography, sonography and CT, translumbar tumorectomy was performed under general anesthesia. The histological diagnosis was retroperitoneal abscess.

We present the results of percutaneous translumbar puncture (PTP) performed in 60 patients diagnosed as having urinary tract obstruction in whom the urographic, ultrasonographic, arteriographic work up and placement of a ureteral catheter for ascending pyelography failed to determine the exact level or nature of the obstruction. We emphasize the fact that PTP revealed the site of obstruction or showed the urinary tract was normal in 86.6% of the cases.

In the last few years there has been an increasing diffusion of endoscopic percutaneous trans-lumbar lithotripsy as a treatment for kidney stones. This technique requires an adequate pyelostomic approach. The authors at this purpose suggest the utilisation of the "One Stick Introducer System Set", that has been created for the biliary tree catheterism as this set is easy to use and rarely traumatic for the patient.
