A new neuritogenic compound NGA0187 was isolated from the fermentation broth of Acremonium sp. TF-0356. The structure of NGA0187 was determined by means of spectroscopic analysis and X-Ray diffraction. NGA0187 induced significant neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells. However, survival effect of NGA0187 on the primary culture of cerebral cortical neurons was not observed.

Neural differentiation is triggered by the activation of multiple signaling pathways initiated by various neurotrophic factors. An elucidation of these mechanisms is anticipated to facilitate the prevention of diseases and the development of novel therapeutic approaches. Alternative small-molecule inducers for neuroscience studies are required instead of protein-based reagents for more efficient and convenient experiments.

The biological functions of rare-earth elements (REEs) have become a focus of intense research. Recent studies have demonstrated that ion doping or alloying of some REEs can optimize the properties of traditional biomaterials. Europium (Eu), which is an REE with low toxicity and good biocompatibility, has promising applications in biomedicine.

At present, the study of the neurotropic activity of polyunsaturated fatty acid ethanolamides (N-acylethanolamines) is becoming increasingly important. N-docosahexaenoylethanolamine (synaptamide, DHEA) is a highly active metabolite of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) with neuroprotective, synaptogenic, neuritogenic, and anti-inflammatory properties in the nervous system. Synaptamide tested in the present study was obtained using a chemical modification of DHA isolated from squid liver.
