Qualitative evaluation of a stress management intervention for elderly caregivers at home: a constructivist approach.

Published: October 2002

The purpose of this project was to evaluate, using a constructivist qualitative design, an individual stress management intervention based on a stress-coping model and intended for family caregivers of elderly persons within the current context of the shift to ambulatory care. This nursing intervention comprised seven weekly encounters with caregivers following their elderly family member's discharge from hospital and a follow-up visit one month after. The aim of the qualitative evaluation was to document the feasibility and acceptability of the content of the intervention, its relevance in terms of process and structure, and the benefits to the principal stakeholders. This action research project was a case study of four participants. The assessment instruments included an intervention analysis grid, a diary, and a semistructured interview guide with the participants. Data analysis drew on Guba and Lincoln's (1989) method which made it possible to refine the intervention. Results underscored that certain implementation conditions must be respected in order to ensure the intervention's acceptability and feasibility. Above all, it must remain flexible and the nurse must possess the requisite clinical skills and theoretical knowledge. It is important also to screen judiciously for caregivers likely to benefit from the intervention. The pertinence of using a circular intervention model rather than a linear approach to stress management was highlighted as well.

Background: Imprisonment has a major impact on a person's psychological well-being. The proportion of older imprisoned persons is dramatically increasing worldwide, and they are likely to have greater physical and mental health needs compared to younger persons in prisons. However, there is currently a lack of research on the psychological stressors and the coping strategies of older imprisoned persons.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent chronic condition characterized by inflammation and oxidative stress, particularly in individuals over 40. Dietary factors, specifically dietary acid load (DAL), may influence these pathological processes. However, the relationship between DAL and inflammatory markers, oxidative stress, and clinical features in patients with KOA remains unexplored.

The management of micronutrients, such as boron (B) and zinc (Zn), is critical for plant growth and crop yields. One method of rapid intervention crop management to mitigate nutritional deficiency is the foliar supply of B and Zn. Our study investigates the effect of foliar-supplied B and Zn availability on the global transcriptional modulation in soybean (Glycine max).

Aim: The aim of the current study was to investigate the potential therapeutic effect of kaurenoic acid (KA) against Monosodium Urate Crystals (MSU)- induced acute gout by downregulation of NF-κB signaling pathway, mitigating inflammation and oxidative stress produced by MSU crystals. KA potentially targeted NF-κB pathway activation and provided comprehensive insights through multiple approaches. This was accomplished by advanced analytical techniques.

Background: Bed bugs are blood-feeders that rapidly proliferate into large indoor infestations. Their bites can cause allergies, secondary infections and psychological stress, among other problems. Although several tactics for their management have been used, bed bugs continue to spread worldwide wherever humans reside.
