Most physicians involved in intensive care consider lactate solely as a deleterious metabolite, responsible for high morbidity and bad prognosis in severe patients. For the physiologist, however, lactate is a key metabolite, alternatively produced or consumed. Many studies in the literature have infused animals or humans with exogenous lactate, demonstrating its safety and usefulness, but the bad reputation of lactate is still widespread. The metabolic meaning of glucose–lactate cycling exceeds its initial role described by Cori and Cori. According to recent works concerning lactate, it can be predicted that a new role as a therapeutic agent will arise for this metabolite.

Background: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) enables a non-invasive measurement of tissue oxygen saturation (StO) in regions illuminated by near-infrared lights. Vascular occlusion test (VOT) serves as a model to artificially induce forearm ischemia-reperfusion. The combination of StO monitoring and VOT allows for dynamic evaluation of the balance between oxygen delivery and consumption in tissue, as well as the functional reserve of microcirculation.

The aim of this study was to assess the critical quality attributes of parenteral nanoemulsion formulations by measuring several physicochemical parameters and linking them to their in vitro performance, illustrating how simplistic and routinely used approaches are insufficient for understanding a potential nanomedicine. Physicochemical characterization should encompass size and size distribution through at least two orthogonal techniques, such as dynamic light scattering (DLS) and electron microscopy, with added value from analytical ultracentrifugation. In vitro toxicity assessment was performed using three different assays to determine mitochondrial activity (WST-1), membrane integrity (lactate dehydrogenase release (LDH) assay), and cell viability (propidium iodide (PI) staining).

The formation of flavor in fermented vegetables is directly associated with the interactions among the resident microbial strains. This study explored the cooperative dynamics between Lactobacillus plantarum and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa in a simulated cabbage juice system. The obtained results indicated that the co-cultivation of these strains accelerated fermentation kinetics and enhanced lactic acid production.
