Servicio y Cátedra de Urología, Hospital del Mar, UAB, Barcelona.

Published: December 2002

Opinion article offering an up-to-date view and evolutionary prediction of the tremendous impact of the gradual but real permeation of the Basic Sciences into the field of Urology. The significance of the transition from anatomy/knowledge/surgical-technique to pathophysiological knowledge/basic-science/medical therapy is emphasised. These criteria provide food for thought in many areas of urology including vesico-prostatic function, erectile dysfunction and, more comprehensively, uro-oncology.

Maternal Cardiovascular Research and Education Should be Prioritized in the US.

Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol

January 2025

Center for Cardiometabolic Science, Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute, Division of Environmental Medicine, Departments of Medicine, University of Louisville, Louisville, KY.

Maternal mortality rates in the US have been increasing steadily over the past decade, with rates significantly increased versus the rest of the developed world, despite the vast healthcare infrastructure. The purpose of this paper is to discuss key areas that need to be addressed within basic science, clinical, and community-based settings to help promote increased education, research, and awareness of specific pregnancy-associated changes that can occur during both healthy and complicated pregnancies. Through increased awareness, we can promote healthier pregnancies and not only help to reduce maternal mortality rates but also improve the long-term cardiovascular outcomes in mothers and their children.

Characterization of Tumor Antigens from Multi-omics Data: Computational Approaches and Resources.

Tumor-specific antigens, also known as neoantigens, have potential utility in anti-cancer immunotherapy, including immune checkpoint blockade (ICB), neoantigen-specific T cell receptor-engineered T (TCR-T), chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T), and therapeutic cancer vaccines (TCVs). After recognizing presented neoantigens, the immune system becomes activated and triggers the death of tumor cells. Neoantigens may be derived from multiple origins, including somatic mutations (single nucleotide variants, insertion/deletions, and gene fusions), circular RNAs, alternative splicing, RNA editing, and polymorphic microbiome.

Department of Medical Sciences, Surgery and Neurosciences, Research Center of Systemic Autoinflammatory Diseases and Behçet's Disease Clinic, University of Siena, Siena, Italy.

Objectives: To assess the lung involvement in patients with Still's disease, an inflammatory disease assessing both children and adults. To exploit possible associated factors for parenchymal lung involvement in these patients.

Methods: A multicentre observational study was arranged assessing consecutive patients with Still's disease characterized by the lung involvement among those included in the AIDA (AutoInflammatory Disease Alliance) Network Still's Disease Registry.

Infant formulas are constantly being updated and upgraded, and N-glycans are functional glycans that have not been fully exploited to date. Commercial whey protein materials are often used as basic ingredients in infant formulas. Therefore, it is important to study N-glycans in commercial whey protein materials.
