The determination of the carbohydrate content of environmental and food samples, performed by spectroscopic and chromatographic methods, needs a preliminary hydrolysis which converts polysaccharides into monosaccharides prior to the analytical measurement. In this paper, a modified procedure of the ultrasound-assisted method for the determination of total carbohydrates, published by the same authors in a previous paper, is presented and discussed. The modified procedure represents an improvement with respect to the previous one because it shortens the hydrolysis time and the colorimetric determination times through the use of two acid media (formic and acetic acid) that also allows quantitative recoveries of total carbohydrates from food and environmental samples.

Organicphosphorus is a ubiquitous pesticide that has potential hazards to human health and environmental well-being. Therefore, the precise identification of residues of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) emerges as an urgent necessity. A ratiometric fluorescent sensor for the detection of OPs by leveraging the catalytic activities of Ce and Ce on the two fluorescent substrates 4-Methylumbelliferyl phosphate (4-MUP) and o-phenylenediamine (OPD) correspondingly was designed.

A novel biomimetic molecular imprinted polymer chip with fluorescence (FL) and structural (STR) states, inspired by color patterns of chameleon skin, is fabricated for detecting diethylstilbestrol (DES). The chip features a regularly structured, non-closed-packed (NCP) colloidal photonic crystal (CPC) lattice made monodisperse MIP spheres containing fluorescence poly ionic liquid (FPIL) pigments. The FL color originates from FPIL pigments and is further enhanced by the Purcell effect, while the STR color results from the periodic arrangement of the NCP CPC structure.

In order to study the optimal use of Lactobacillus plantarum in sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus), 49 days feeding trial was conducted to determine the influence of immersion bathing in different concentrations of Lactobacillus plantarum CLY-05 on body weight gain rate and non-specific immune activities. The potential effect of CLY-05 on gut microbiota was also analyzed during the immersion bathing at the optimum concentration. The results showed that the body weight growth rate of all bathing groups was higher than that of control.

Food wasted in primary and secondary education institutions creates nutritional losses, financial inefficiencies, and environmental degradation. While there is some evidence of how particular interventions within schools may influence the amount of waste created, there is little recent information about typical levels of food waste generated in U.S.

Heavy metals and metalloids are increasingly recognised as a threat to avian health, especially in species at the top of the food chain such as vultures. Griffon Vultures (Gyps fulvus) are ideal bioindicators for studying environmental contamination due to their scavenging habits and territorial behavior. In this study, we analysed the concentrations of six trace elements (Cd, Pb, Cr, Sb, Ni, and Cu) in feathers, pectoral plumage, and blood samples of Griffon Vultures from a captive environment in Sicily, Southern Italy, using an ICP-MS method.
