The issue of driving in the elderly population will continue to be relevant for public discourse. Because the termination of driving may be seen as an end of independence, it is important to appreciate that it has both emotional and pragmatic consequence. Senescence includes a host of physiological changes that may influence one's driving ability. Yet, aging alone does not infer poor driving ability. Health care providers should encourage and support the development of accurate methods of evaluation for older drivers and discuss adaptive strategies with older drivers in an effort to maintain their independence while promoting public safety.

Highly abundant in neurons, the cellular prion protein (PrP) is an obligatory precursor to the disease-associated misfolded isoform denoted PrP that accumulates in the rare neurodegenerative disorders referred to either as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) or as prion diseases. The ability of PrP to serve as a substrate for this template-mediated conversion process depends on several criteria but importantly includes the presence or absence of certain endoproteolytic events performed at the cell surface or in acidic endolysosomal compartments. The major endoproteolytic events affecting PrP are referred to as α- and β-cleavages, and in this review we outline the sites within PrP at which the cleavages occur, the mechanisms potentially responsible and their relevance to pathology.

Hybrid nano-sized motors with navigation and self-actuation capabilities have emerged as promising nanocarriers for a wide range of delivery, sensing, and diagnostic applications due to their unique ability to achieve controllable locomotion within a complex biological environment such as tissue. However, most current nanomotors typically operate using a single driving mode, whereas propulsion induced by both external and local stimuli could be more beneficial to achieve efficient motility in a biomedical setting. Amphiphilic polymers with distinct polarity differences, known as sharp polarity contrast polymers (SPCPs), have gained much attention for their ability to form micelles with low critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) and potential in anticancer drug delivery. This study addresses the limited research on structure-property relationships of SPCPs by developing various SPCPs and exploring their physicochemical properties and biological applications. Specifically, the superhydrophobic aliphatic palmitoyl (Pal) was coupled to the superhydrophilic zwitterionic poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (pMPC) to form Pal-pMPC diblock copolymers.

While recycling irrigation water can reduce water use constraints and costs in nurseries, adoption is hindered by the associated risk of recirculating and spreading waterborne pathogens. To enable regional water re-use, this study assessed oomycete re-circulation risks and recycled water treatment efficacy at organismal and community scales. In culture-based analysis of recycled pond water at two Mid-Atlantic nurseries across three years, diverse oomycetes (12+ species) were detected using culture-based analysis, with Phytopythium helicoides as the dominant species; MiSeq analysis detected eight of these species, plus 24 additional taxa.
