Chemosensory proteins (CSPs) are believed to be involved in chemical communication and perception. A number of such proteins, of molecular mass approximately 13 kDa, have been isolated from different sensory organs of a wide range of insect species. Several CSPs have been identified in the antennae and proboscis of the moth Mamestra brassicae. CSPMbraA6, a 112-amino-acid antennal protein, has been expressed in a soluble form in large quantities in the Escherichi coli periplasm. NMR structure determination of CSPMbraA6 has been performed with 1H- and 15N-labelled samples. The calculated structures present an average root mean square deviation about the mean structure of 0.63 A for backbone atoms and 1.27 A for all non-hydrogen atoms except the 12 N-terminal residues. The protein is well folded from residue 12 to residue 110, and consists of a non-bundle alpha-helical structure with six helices connected by alpha alpha loops. It has a globular shape, with overall dimensions of 32 A x 28 A x 24 A. A channel is visible in the hydrophobic core, with dimensions of 3 A x 9 A x 21 A. In some of the 20 solution structures calculated, this channel is closed either by Trp-94 at one end or by Tyr-26 at the other end; in some other solutions, this channel is closed at both ends. Binding experiments with 12-bromododecanol indicate that the CSPMbraA6 structure is modified upon ligand binding.

A baculovirus had been previously identified in larvae of the zebra caterpillar, Melanchra (formerly Ceramica) picta Harris. To further characterize this virus, two isolates, Melanchra picta nucleopolyhedrovirus-185 (MepiNPV-185) and MepiNPV-600, were fully sequenced. Analysis of the genome sequences revealed that both isolates are members of alphabaculovirus species Alphabaculovirus maconfiguratae, along with alphabaculoviruses of the bertha armyworm, Mamestra configurata Walker.

We report the genomic analysis of a novel alphabaculovirus, Mythimna sequax nucleopolyhedrovirus isolate CNPSo-98 (MyseNPV-CNPSo-98), obtained from cadavers of the winter crop pest, Mythimna sequax Franclemont (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The insects were collected from rice fields in Southern Brazil in the 1980's and belongs to the 'EMBRAPA-Soja' Virus Collection. High-throughput sequencing reads of DNA from MyseNPV occlusion bodies and assembly of the data yielded an AT-rich circular genome contig of 148,403 bp in length with 163 annotated opening reading frames (ORFs) and four homologous regions (hrs).

In the context of the widespread expansion of damage by herbivorous pests of crops, taking into account the requirements for minimizing pesticide pollution of the environment, it is important to have fundamental knowledge of the geographical features of the distribution of pests and about the botanical confinement of plant resistance in order to develop a strategy for creating new cultivars with complex resistance to insects. The relevance of our work is related to the study of the variability in the degree of resistance of the extensive genetic diversity of accessions to the main herbivorous pests of crops in contrasting ecological and geographical zones of the Russian Federation (Arctic, northwestern, and southern zones). We have studied the distribution and food preferences of Lepidoptera insects (diamondback moth and cabbage moth ) on a set of 100 accessions from the VIR collection (Chinese cabbage, pakchoi, wutacai, zicaitai, mizuna, and leaf and root turnips) in the field in three zones of the Russian Federation.

Baculoviruses are highly host specific, and their host range is usually restricted to a single or a few closely related insect species, except for few virus species, e.g. and .
