Background: The brain undergoes structural changes during aging, such as gray matter loss, enlarged ventricles, and sulcal widening. However, previous studies have primarily investigated these changes in isolation, without describing the complex spatial relationships between overall brain shape and regions. Here, we tested how gradients of expansion and compression of the global shape of the brain as well as between homologous brain regions across hemispheres are affected by age, and whether these changes further contribute to clinical impairment and cognitive deficits in older adults.

Numerous diseases have been connected to protein arginine methylations mediated by protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5). Clinical investigations of the PRMT5-specific inhibitor GSK3326595 are currently being conducted, and the results are promising for preventing cancers. However, the detailed mechanism of PRMT5 promoting colorectal cancer (CRC) malignant progression remains unclear.

Hippocampal dendritic spines store-operated calcium entry and endoplasmic reticulum content is dynamic microtubule dependent.

Sci Rep

One of the mechanisms of calcium signalling in neurons is store-operated calcium entry (SOCE), which is activated when the calcium concentration in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER) decreases and its protein-calcium sensor STIM (stromal interacting molecule) relocate to the endoplasmic reticulum and plasma membrane junctions, forms clusters and induces calcium entry. In electrically non-excitable cells, STIM1 is coupled with the positive end of a tubulin microtubule through interaction with EB1 (end-binding) protein, which controls its oligomerization, SOCE and participates in ER movement. STIM2 homologue, which is specific for mature hippocampal dendritic spines, is known to interact with EB3 protein, however, not much is known about the role of this interaction in STIM2 clustering or ER trafficking in neurons.

Isolation and characterisation of a heparosan capsular polysaccharide and a core oligosaccharide from Moraxella lincolnii strain CCUG 52988.

School of Pharmacy and Medical Science, Griffith University, Gold Coast Campus, Queensland, 4222, Australia; Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics, Griffith University, Gold Coast Campus, Queensland, 4222, Australia. Electronic address:

Moraxella lincolnii is a Gram-negative bacterium that resides in the upper respiratory tract (URT) of humans and may have a role as a member of a protective microbial community. Structural characterisation studies of its outer membrane glycan structures are very limited. We report here the isolation and structural characterisation (NMR, GLC-MS) of a capsular polysaccharide (CPS) and an oligosaccharide (OS) (lipooligosaccharide (LOS)-derived) isolated from strain CCUG 52988.

Binding of to dystrophin impairs the membrane trafficking of Nav1.5 protein and increases ventricular arrhythmia susceptibility.

Elife

January 2025

Department of Pharmacology (The Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Research, Ministry of Education) at College of Pharmacy, Harbin Medical University, Harbin, China.

Dystrophin is a critical interacting protein of Nav1.5 that determines its membrane anchoring in cardiomyocytes. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in the regulation of cardiac ion channels, while their influence on sodium channels remains unexplored.
