Recent developments in electrophoresis of cells are reviewed. Problems and progress in automation and miniaturization of analytical electrophoresis instruments as well as in the interpretation of experimentally determined electrophoretic mobility (EPM) data are summarized: In recent times, the EPM determination techniques not only became more reliable and faster, but also more knowledge could be gained about the cell surface electrical properties, the structure of the glycocalyx as well as its influence on the cell peripheral regions and microenvironment by applying cell electrophoresis. In addition, ways are shown to solve discrepancies between physical requirements of a preparative cell electrophoresis procedure and the quantities of ions, which have to be dissolved in cell suspension media. As the modern machines allow the purification of untagged cells suspended in more cell friendly and physiological media, they are likely to be valuable tools in several useful practical applications in clinical transplantation, gene therapy and treatment of disease states.

Purpose: To investigate the presence of uridine-5'-triphosphate (UTP)-activated P2Y1-like nucleotide receptors (P2Y2R, P2Y4R, and P2Y6R) in conjunctival goblet cells (CGCs) and determine if they increase intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and induce mucin secretion.
Methods: Adult, male rat conjunctiva was used for culture of CGCs. To investigate the expression of P2YRs, mRNA was extracted from CGCs and used for reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) with commercially obtained primers specific to P2Y2R, P2Y4R, and P2Y6R.

We report an interesting case of an elderly male patient with splenic marginal zone lymphoma with a monoclonal cluster of differentiation (CD)5+ B cells. The patient developed signs of renal injury and was evaluated via serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixation electrophoresis, which revealed monoclonal gammopathy with elevated free lambda light chain. However, a bone biopsy ruled out a diagnosis of multiple myeloma.

The natural compound orotic acid and its anionic form, orotate, play a pivotal role in various biological processes, serving as essential intermediates in pyrimidine de novo synthesis, with demonstrated connections to dietary, supplement, and neurodrug applications. A novel perspective on biomolecular aggregation at the nanoscale, particularly pertinent to neurodegeneration, challenges the established paradigm positing that peptide (amyloid beta) and protein (tau) aggregation mainly govern the molecular events underlying prevalent neuropathologies. Emerging biological evidence indicates a notable role for G-quadruplex (G4) DNA aggregation in neurodegenerative processes affecting neuronal cells, particularly in the presence of extended (GC) repeats in nuclear DNA sequences.

Purpose: To study the roles of tubulin acetylation and cyclic mechanical stretch (CMS) in trabecular meshwork (TM) cells and their impact on outflow pathway physiology and pathology.
Methods: Primary TM cell cultures were subjected to CMS (8% elongation, 24 hours), and acetylated α-tubulin at lysine 40 (Ac-TUBA4) was assessed by western blotting and immunofluorescence. Enzymes regulating tubulin acetylation were identified via siRNA-mediated knockdowns of ATAT1, HDAC6, and SIRT2.
