Thirty myomas in 24 symptomatic patients who refused conventional surgery were treated by interstitial laser photocoagulation, monitored by laparoscopy. The procedure was well tolerated. Magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasound scanning documented shrinkage in 23 lesions (those lesions >6 cm in diameter responded poorly), with clinical benefit in 13 patients.

Focal therapy (FT) is an emerging option for intermediate-risk prostate cancer (IR-PCa). Transperineal MRI fusion laser ablation of PCa (TPFLA) is a novel FT technique with limited data reported. We conducted a phase I clinical trial evaluating the safety, feasibility, and 1-year oncologic results for patients with IR-PCa treated with TPFLA in an office setting.

Epilepsy is a common neurological disease that is treated with medications; however, patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, commonly intractable temporal lobe epilepsy, tend to have better control with surgical treatment. While the mainstay of surgical treatment is anterior temporal lobectomy, it carries risk of potential adverse effects hence minimally invasive techniques are now being used as an alternative to open surgery. This systematic review and meta-analysis compare the efficacy and safety of three of the most used techniques: laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT), radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).

Objectives: Robotic-assisted laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive method for ablating seizure foci and has gained prominence in epilepsy treatment. The use of robotic guidance in these procedures can minimize errors in probe placement, potentially leading to better clinical outcomes. In this meta-analysis, we assessed the accuracy, safety, and effectiveness of robot-assisted LITT for drug-resistant epilepsy.

Objective: to study the anatomical feasibility of laser fiber insertion for interstitial thermal therapy via transorbital approach to the temporo-mesial structures (amygdala-hippocampus-parahippocampus complex).

Methods: Anatomical dissections were performed bilaterally on two human cadaveric heads via a transorbital approach, in which screws and laser fibers were used for magnetic resonance imaging-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRIgLITT) assisted by neuronavigation. In addition, eight transorbital trajectories were simulated using the transorbital entry points obtained from a cadaveric radiological study of four patients previously operated on for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

A survey of paediatric epilepsy surgery in Asia and Australasia.

Childs Nerv Syst

January 2025

Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Starship Children's Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand.

Purpose: In this study, we aimed to define the scope of paediatric epilepsy surgery performed in Asia and Australasia.

Methods: Representative surgeons from each county were emailed a survey about paediatric epilepsy surgery as it is practiced in their country. The survey covered topics including what investigations, operations and number of surgeries are performed and by whom (adult or paediatric neurosurgeons).
