Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was applied to examine human serum very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in aqueous solution and in solid film for characterizing lipid components. On the basis of the FT-IR second-derivative spectra for standard samples of triglycerides, cholesterol esters and phospholipids, it was found that the band at 1746 cm(-1) for VLDL and the band at 1738 cm(-1) for LDL were mainly due to the unsaturated triglycerides and unsaturated cholesterol esters, respectively. The implications of ester C=O stretching bands are discussed.

Context: COVID-19 has been associated with features of a cytokine storm syndrome with some patients sharing features with the hyperinflammatory disorder, secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH).
Hypothesis: We hypothesized that proteins associated with sHLH from other causes will be associated with COVID-sHLH and that subjects with fatal COVID-sHLH would have defects in immune-related pathways.
Methods And Models: We identified two cohorts of adult patients presenting with COVID-19 at two tertiary care hospitals in Seattle, Washington in 2020 and 2021.

Unlabelled: This study compared denosumab and zoledronic acid for treating osteoporosis in drug-naïve postmenopausal Korean women. Over 3 years, both drugs significantly increased bone mineral density. However, denosumab also improved fat-free mass, suggesting it may be a better initial treatment for osteoporosis with low muscle mass, assuming all other conditions remain constant.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare acquired paraneoplastic syndrome caused by a mesenchymal tumor secreting a phosphaturic hormone called FGF23. Patients present with bone pain, fragility fractures and muscle weakness. Biochemical results show hypophosphatemia, raised serum alkaline phosphatase and reduced calcitriol.

Purpose: microRNA-371a-3p (M371) is considered a highly sensitive and specific serum biomarker of testicular germ cell tumours (GCTs). However, little is known about the expression of M371 in nontesticular malignancies (NTMs), so far. As knowledge about the expression of the marker in other malignancies is a prerequisite for the clinical application of the test we aimed to explore the M371 expression in other cancers.

Sulfated progesterone metabolites (PMxS) increase during gestation and are raised further in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), a disorder characterised by pruritus and elevated serum bile acids. PMxS interact with bile acid receptor G protein-coupled bile acid receptor 1 (GPBAR1) to cause itch. We investigated whether PMxS could undergo enterohepatic recycling and stimulate intestinal GPBAR1-mediated release of gut hormones glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY).
