Runaway dilaton and equivalence principle violations.

Published: August 2002

In a recently proposed scenario, where the dilaton decouples while cosmologically attracted towards infinite bare string coupling, its residual interactions can be related to the amplitude of density fluctuations generated during inflation, and are large enough to be detectable through a modest improvement on present tests of free-fall universality. Provided it has significant couplings to either dark matter or dark energy, a runaway dilaton can also induce time variations of the natural "constants" within the reach of near-future experiments.

During the final stages of black hole evaporation, ultraviolet deviations from general relativity eventually become dramatic, potentially affecting the end state. We explore this problem by performing nonlinear simulations of wave packets in Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, the only gravity theory with quadratic curvature terms which can be studied at a fully nonperturbative level. Black holes in this theory have a minimum mass but also a nonvanishing temperature.

We consider the environment-dependent dilaton in the laboratory and the solar system and derive approximate analytical solutions to the field theory equations of motion in the presence of a one or two mirror system or a sphere. The solutions obtained herein can be applied to BOUNCE experiments, neutron interferometry and for the calculation of the dilaton field induced "Casimir force" in the Cannex experiment as well as for Lunar Laser Ranging. They are typical of the Damour-Polyakov screening mechanism whereby deviations from General Relativity are suppressed by a vanishingly small direct coupling of the dilaton to matter in dense environments.

Dilatation symmetry in higher dimensions and the vanishing of the cosmological constant.

A wide class of dilatation symmetric effective actions in higher dimensions leads to a vanishing four-dimensional cosmological constant. This requires no tuning of parameters and results from the absence of an allowed potential for the scalar dilaton field. The field equations admit many solutions with flat four-dimensional space and nonvanishing gauge couplings.
