Based on the measured data and the model of plotted watershed hydrology, the benefit of sediment reduction by biological harnesses of soil and water conservation was studied in the watershed scale. The result indicated that the erosion modulus in Wangdonggou watershed, which were 1869 t.km-2, 1050 t.km-2, 383 t.km-2, and 504 t.km-2 in the periods of the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth five-year plans, respectively, were gradually reduced by comprehensive measures. Taken out the effect of rainfall, the sediment reduction by biological measures of soil and water conservation was increased by 24.1% and 22.4% in the periods of eighth and ninth five-year plans compared to that in the seventh five-year plan.

Introduction: Room air class (RC) Ib may be necessary for surgical procedures in aseptic working areas. The aim of the study was to examine whether a mobile, three-stage sterile ventilation unit (MSVU) can replace a room ventilation system (RVS) with turbulent mixed flow (TMF) in the area of the operating field and on the instrument table from hygienic-microbiological point of view.
Method: During 26 surgeries (varicose vein stripping or treatment of umbilical and inguinal hernias), the microbial load was recorded at 4 measuring points (M1-M4) during regular operations by setting up sedimentation plates and measuring the particle concentration.

Based on the potential bactericidal properties of borate, we synthesized controlled-release borate (CRB) as a novel biocide to inhibit microbial proliferation in a recirculating cooling water system (RCS). In this study, toxicity experiments of CRB were conducted on the dominant bacteria and algae isolated from an actual RCS. The effects of CRB on biocidal performance and genotoxicity were evaluated in a simulated RCS.

Dredging in estuarine systems significantly impacts phytoplankton communities, with suspended particulate matter (SPM) and dissolved aluminum (Al) serving as indicators of disturbance intensity. This study assessed the effects of dredging in the São Marcos Estuarine Complex (SMEC), Brazil, over three distinct events (2015, 2017, 2020), involving varying sediment volumes and climatic influences. Prolonged dredging operations and increased sediment volumes led to a pronounced 43.

The Baltic Sea, a semi-enclosed marginal sea with a catchment area four times its size, acts as a sink and continues to show detectable levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in its sediments. This is attributed to the synthesis and industrial use of commercial polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) products, as well as the widespread use and discharge of certain chlorinated pesticides into the natural environment during the last century. Our study investigates chlorinated hydrocarbon pollutants, the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites as well as hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in sediments based on several short sediment cores from different basins covering almost the entire Baltic Sea.

The role of metal resistance on nitrogen metabolism function and community resilience against Cd is important for elucidating the evolutionary dynamics of key ecological functions in river ecosystems. In this study, the response of nitrogen transforming function to Cd exposure in river sediments from the Yangtze River Basin with varying levels of heavy metal contamination history (Cd-contaminated and Cd-free sediments) was compared to understand how Cd influenced nitrogen metabolism under varying metal resistance conditions. The results showed that chronic and persistent Cd pollution of sediments caused an elevation of transport efflux metal resistance genes (MRGs) and a reduction in the uptake MRGs, leading to a stronger tolerance to Cd for Cd-contaminated sediment than Cd-free ones.
