The change in the developmental pathway of microspores from gametophytic to sporophytic is induced by stress during pretreatment of spikes and anthers. In our experiments, anther culture of three barley cultivars was tested with regard to the effect of chilling at 4 degrees C for 28 days, starvation in 0.3 M mannitol solution for 4 days, and a combination of both methods. Chilling was shown to increase embryo/callus formation, while mannitol treatment favoured plant development, including development of green plants; simultaneous application of the two stress factors for 4 days proved to be ineffective. The tested cultivars exhibited a similar ability (calculated per 100 transferred embryos/calli) to develop plants without pretreatment; however, their responses to stress varied greatly. The collected data indicate that mannitol pretreatment, as compared to chilling, is more efficient in responsive cultivars.

Nearly half of the bee species can perform a fascinating stereotyped behavior to collect pollen grains by vibrating flowers, known as buzz pollination. During the floral visit, these bees mechanically transfer the vibrations produced by their thoracic indirect flight muscles to the flower anther, inducing the movement of the pollen grains and leading them to be released through a small pore or slit placed at the tip of the anther in poricidal flowers. In such flowers, pollen release is affected by the vibrational behavior of buzzing bees, primarily their duration and velocity amplitude.

Plant developmental biology necessitates precise three-dimensional (3D) tracking of dynamic processes in live plants, and the 3D imaging technique in developmental bioimaging requires suitable fluorophores to achieve single-cell resolution imaging. Herein, we have designed a series of plasma membrane fluorescent dyes with a number of excellent properties and established a single-cell resolution imaging tool based on these dyes for three-dimensional imaging of various tissues and organs in living plants. The designed plasma membrane fluorescent dyes not only have the advantages of rapid wash-free staining, highly specific targeting, high brightness and high contrast imaging, ultralong imaging time and low biotoxicity, but also effectively avoid the autofluorescence interference of chlorophyll in cells, allowing for the development of a three-dimensional imaging approach of living plant organs with single-cell resolution.

The flowers of distylous plants exhibit two distinct morphologies that facilitate precise pollen transfer. Averrhoa carambola, a woody plant characterized by distyly, has an unclear molecular regulatory mechanism underlying this trait. Its prolonged flowering period and substantial flower production render it an excellent model for investigating the distylous syndrome.
