Objectives/hypothesis: To demonstrate the efficacy of external beam radiation therapy as a primary treatment modality for the management of patients with advanced juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA).
Study Design: Retrospective chart review.
Methods: The medical records of 130 patients with the diagnosis of JNA seen at UCLA Medical Center over a 41-year period (1960-2000) were retrospectively reviewed.
Results: One hundred thirty cases of JNA have been seen at UCLA Medical Center from 1960 to 2000. One hundred two were treated with surgical resection, 1 refused therapy, and the remaining 27 received radiation (3000-5500 cGy) as their primary mode of treatment. Fifteen percent (4 of 27) of the irradiated patients developed recurrent tumor 2 to 5 years later. Long-term complications occurred in 4 patients (15%) and consisted of growth retardation, panhypopituitarism, temporal lobe necrosis, cataracts, and radiation keratopathy.
Conclusions: External beam radiation therapy represents an effective mode of treatment for patients with advanced JNA. Although the latency period may be long, we think the likelihood of potentially fatal complications developing at the radiation dosages we recommend is less than the risk of significant morbidity and mortality associated with surgical intervention in these cases.

Plasmodesmata are cell-wall-embedded channels that evolved in the common ancestor of land plants to increase cell-to-cell communication. Whether all the fundamental properties of plasmodesmata emerged and were inherited in all land plants at the same time is unknown. Here we show that the bryophyte Marchantia polymorpha (a non-vascular plant) forms mostly simple plasmodesmata in early-developing gemmae.

The Trabocchi Coast in the Chieti district of the mid-Adriatic (Italy) is one of the few rocky areas within the General Fisheries Commission GSA 17, alongside Mount Conero (Ancona 43°00'01″ N 13°52'13″ E) and the small San Nicola Rock (Ascoli Piceno; 43°32'0″ N 13°36'0″ E). This coastline is known for its biodiversity-rich bays, inlets, and submerged cliffs. The present review provides the first analysis and synthesis of the available scientific information on the effects of anthropogenic contaminants on cephalopod embryos, paralarvae, and juveniles. We evaluated 46 articles published between 1970 and 2023 that focused on trace elements (69%), pharmaceutical compounds (11%), persistent organic compounds (11%), and plastics (9%). To date, the greatest scientific effort has originated from Europe and Asia (France [57%], China [9%], Italy [7%], and Spain [4%]), with few reports available from the rest of the world.
