A new binucleating ligand containing phenoxide as an endogenous bridging group, 2,6-diformyl-p-cresol bis(2-furanthiocarboxyhydrazone) and its binuclear Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes with chloride ion as an exogenous bridge, have been obtained. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivities, magnetic moment measurements at room temperature, electronic, IR, 1H-NMR, EPR, FAB spectral studies and thermal data. The copper complex assumes a tetranuclear structure composed of two binuclear units related by a center of symmetry. The dimeric nature of copper(II) complex is supported by FAB. This complex is EPR silent. Room temperature magnetic moment reveals the operation of a significant antiferromagnetic spin exchange between the metal centers. Ligand and its copper and zinc complexes exhibit fluorescence at room temperature in DMF. All the compounds show an appreciable antimicrobial activity.

Solvatochromism and cis-trans isomerism in azobenzene-4-sulfonyl chloride.

CQC-IMS, Department of Chemistry, University of Coimbra, 3004-535, Coimbra, Portugal.

Solvatochromism exhibited by azobenzene-4-sulfonyl chloride (here abbreviated as Azo-SCl) has been investigated in a series of non-polar, polar-aprotic and polar-protic solvents. The UV-vis spectra of Azo-SCl exhibit two long-wavelength bands, observed at 321-330 nm (band-I) and 435-461 nm (band-II), which are ascribed to the π*-π (S ← S) and π*-n (S ← S) transitions, respectively. The shorter wavelength band indicates a reversal in solvatochromism, from negative to positive solvatochromism, for a solvent with a dielectric constant of 32.

Scaling and networking a modular photonic quantum computer.

Nature

January 2025

Xanadu Quantum Technologies Inc., Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Photonics offers a promising platform for quantum computing, owing to the availability of chip integration for mass-manufacturable modules, fibre optics for networking and room-temperature operation of most components. However, experimental demonstrations are needed of complete integrated systems comprising all basic functionalities for universal and fault-tolerant operation. Here we construct a (sub-performant) scale model of a quantum computer using 35 photonic chips to demonstrate its functionality and feasibility.

Monocarpic plants flower only once and then produce seeds. Many monocarpic plants require a cold treatment known as vernalization before they flower. This requirement delays flowering until the plant senses warm temperatures in the spring.

First-principles study of structural, elastic, electronic, transport properties, and dielectric breakdown of CsTe photocathode.

Sci Rep

Accelerator Operations and Technology Division, Los Alamos National Laboratory, P.O. Box 1663, Los Alamos, NM, 87545, USA.

The pursuit to operate photocathodes at high accelerating gradients to increase brightness of electron beams is gaining interests within the accelerator community, particularly for applications such as free electron lasers (FEL) and compact accelerators. Cesium telluride (CsTe) is a widely used photocathode material and it is presumed to offer resilience to higher gradients because of its wider band gap compared to other semiconductors. Despite its advantages, crucial material properties of CsTe remain largely unknown both in theory and experiments.

Field switching of microfabricated metamagnetic FeRh MRI contrast agents.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Laboratory of Functional and Molecular Imaging, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, 20892, USA.

In a step towards generating switchable MRI cellular labels, we demonstrate in-situ field switching of micron scale metamagnetic Iron-Rhodium (FeRh) thin film particles. A thin-film (200 nm) FeRh sample was fabricated and patterned into an array of progressively smaller squares with sizes ranging from 500 μm down to 1 μm. The large first order phase change from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state was characterized using vibrating sample magnetometry, magnetic force microscopy, and MRI.
