An experimental observation of a new nonlinear-modulation effect for longitudinal elastic waves is reported. The phenomenon is a direct elastic wave analogy with the so-called Luxemburg-Gorky (L-G) effect known over 60 years for radio waves propagating in the ionosphere. The effect consists of the appearance of modulation of a weaker initially non-modulated wave propagating in a nonlinear medium in the presence of an amplitude-modulated stronger wave that produces perturbations in the medium properties on the scale of its modulation frequency. The reported transfer of modulation from one elastic wave to another was observed in a resonator cut of a glass rod containing a few small cracks. Presence of such a small damage drastically enhances the material nonlinearity compared to elastic atomic nonlinearity of homogeneous solids, so that the pronounced L-G type cross-modulation could be observed at strain magnitude in the stronger wave down to 10(-7) and smaller. Main features of the effect are pointed out and physical mechanism of the observed phenomena is discussed.

Grouping of chemicals has been proposed as a strategy to speed up the screening and identification of potential substances of concern among the broad chemical universe under REACH. Such grouping is usually based on shared structural features and should only be used for the prioritization objectives. However, additional considerations (as well as structural similarity) are needed, e.

During 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended the first respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) immunizations intended for widespread use in the United States to prevent severe RSV illness in infants and older adults. CDC, in collaboration with federal, public health, and academic partners, is conducting evaluations of real-world effectiveness of recommended RSV immunization products in the United States. Similar frameworks for evaluation are being applied to RSV vaccines and nirsevimab, a long-acting preventative monoclonal antibody, to estimate product effectiveness.

Acoustic characteristics of three English semivowels /l, ɹ, w/ and vowels in young children with and without speech sound disorders.

J Commun Disord

December 2024

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, Human Sciences and Services 127, 239 Water Street, Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54703, United States. Electronic address:

Purpose: The aim of the current study is to examine if the relationship among three semivowel sounds (/l, ɹ, w/) and between the semivowel and the following vowel differs by children's overall speech proficiency, and if this relationship affects listeners' perceptual judgment of the liquid sounds (/l, ɹ/). The acoustic proximity among the three semivowel sounds and the acoustic characteristics of the following vowel sounds were examined by each child speaker's overall speech sound proficiency and their semivowel accuracy.

Methods: A total of 21 monolingual English-speaking children with and without speech sound disorders produced monosyllabic words that include target semivowel sounds in word-initial position in different vowel contexts.

Research demonstrates that self-objectification negatively impacts both cisgender heterosexual women and men. However, measures of self-objectification have primarily been designed for and validated in women, raising doubts about their applicability to men and demonstrated gender differences in self-objectification. This research investigated the psychometric properties of the Self-Objectification Beliefs and Behaviors Scale (SOBBS; Lindner & Tantleff-Dunn, 2017) in cisgender heterosexual women, and for the first time, in cisgender heterosexual men.
