We address the issues that were raised by Tycho and Jørgensen [Appl. Opt. 41, 4709 (2002)] concerning our strategy [Appl. Opt. 39, 5244 (2000)] for incorporating the wave properties of light in the description of a propagating focused excitation beam in a highly scattering medium. We explain that the strategy is consistent with the Huygens-Fresnel principle and does not violate the energy conservation principle.

Article Synopsis
  • The study presents a method for creating twisted helical cellulose nanocrystal films using 3D printing, achieving unique optical properties.
  • The films exhibit high transparency and dual circular polarization, with different types depending on the printing orientation.
  • These materials have potential applications in photonics, thermal management, and energy efficiency due to their ability to manipulate light in the near-infrared region.

Short-wave infrared (SWIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (LED) technology holds promise for advancing broadband light sources. Despite the potential, limited research has delved into the energy transfer mechanism from sharp-line to broadband emission in SWIR phosphors, which remains underexplored. Herein, we demonstrate bright SWIR phosphors achieved through Cr/Ni energy transfer in LiGaAl O.

Triplet excited states in organic semiconductors are usually optically dark and long-lived as they have a spin-forbidden transition to the singlet ground state and therefore hinder processes in light-harvesting applications. Also, triplets often cause damage to the system as they can sensitize the formation of reactive singlet oxygen. Despite these unfavorable characteristics, there exist mechanisms through which we can utilize triplet states, and that constitutes the scope of this review.

Multilayered metal-dielectric nanostructures display both a strong plasmonic behavior and hyperbolic optical dispersion. The latter is responsible for the appearance of two separated radiative and nonradiative channels in the extinction spectrum of these structures. This unique property can open plenty of opportunities toward the development of multifunctional systems that simultaneously can behave as optimal scatterers and absorbers at different wavelengths, an important feature to achieve multiscale control of light-matter interactions in different spectral regions for different types of applications, such as optical computing or detection of thermal radiation.

Background: The proliferation of electronic health record (EHR) alerts has led to widespread alert fatigue and clinician burnout, undermining the effectiveness of clinical decision support and compromising patient safety.

Objective: We introduce a comprehensive style guide for designing interruptive alerts (IAs) in EHR systems to improve clinician engagement and reduce alert fatigue that has been approved by our institutional alert governance committees. This style guide addresses critical aspects of IAs, including format, typography, color-coding, title brevity, patient identification, and introductory text.
