One of the new problems that has to be solved for segmented mirrors is related to periodic phasing, because for such mirrors to exhibit diffraction-limited performance the segments have to be positioned with an accuracy of a fraction of a wavelength. We describe the optical design of an instrument that measures the phasing errors (i.e., tip, tilt, and piston) between two segments under daylight conditions. Its design is based on a high-aperture white-light Michelson interferometer. It was developed at the Center for Sensors, Instruments and Systems Development (CD6) of the Technical University of Catalunya, Spain, and its final testing was carried out on the Gran Telescopio Canarias test workbench.

Direct methods based on iterative projection algorithms can determine protein crystal structures directly from X-ray diffraction data without prior structural information. However, traditional direct methods often converge to local minima during electron density iteration, leading to reconstruction failure. Here, we present an enhanced direct method incorporating genetic algorithms for electron density modification in real space.

In this paper, we present a method based on the conjugate image principle and micro-nano optics to detect tilt aberrations of a phased fiber laser array system. A co-aperture optics system was adapted to detect the tilt aberrations of a seven-element phased fiber laser array system simultaneously. A Kepler telescope was designed to construct the conjugate relation between the exit pupil of a fiber optic laser array system and a microlens array and also to match the size of the seven beams and the microlens array.

Variant calling using long-read RNA sequencing (lrRNA-seq) can be applied to diverse tasks, such as capturing full-length isoforms and gene expression profiling. It poses challenges, however, due to higher error rates than DNA data, the complexities of transcript diversity, RNA editing events, etc. In this paper, we propose Clair3-RNA, the first deep learning-based variant caller tailored for lrRNA-seq data.

The frequency diverse array (FDA) is an architecture capable of beamforming in both range and angle, improving upon the traditional phased array (PA) which can only achieve beamforming in angle. The FDA employing directional modulation (DM) for secure directional communications (SDC) can reduce bit error rates (BERs) in both range and angle, again improving upon the traditional PA which can only reduce BER in angle. In this paper, we document the challenges involved in the design and implementation of a two-element linear FDA employing fast-time binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulations.

Phased structures for lossless ion manipulation offer significant improvements over the scanning second gate method for coupling with ion trap mass analyzers. With an experimental run time of under 1 min for select conditions and an average run time of less than 4 min, this approach significantly reduces experimental time while enhancing the temporal duty cycle. The outlined SLIM system connects to an ion trap mass analyzer via a PCB stacked ring ion guide, which replaces the commercial ion optics and capillary inlet.
