Reversing antibiotic resistance.

Expert Opin Investig Drugs

Published: August 2002

Over the past decade many well-tried chemotherapeutic agents have lost their effectiveness. This is due to a phenomenon referred to as multi-drug resistance. The most likely cause of multi-drug resistance is an increase in the activity of an efflux pump mediated through the actions of a P-glycoprotein. There is a continuing search, not only for new chemotherapeutic agents, but also for agents that can reverse the acquired resistance to existing agents.

Despite notable progress in treatment modalities, cancer continues to be a prom-inent cause of death globally. Chemotherapy is the main method used to treat cancer, and chemotherapeutic medications are categorized according to how they work. Nevertheless, the issue of multidrug resistance (MDR) is a significant obstacle, impacting almost 90% of cancer patients who receive chemotherapy or innovative targeted medicines.

Co-selection for antibiotic resistance by environmental contaminants.

The environment is increasingly recognised as a hotspot for the selection and dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes. These can be selected for by antibiotics and non-antibiotic agents (such as metals and biocides), with the evidence to support this well established by observational and experimental studies. However, there is emerging evidence to suggest that plant protection products (such as herbicides), and non-antibiotic drugs (such as chemotherapeutic agents), can also co-select for antibiotic resistance.

Ovarian cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women, and the development of chemoresistance remains a major challenge during and after its treatment. Exosomes, small extracellular vesicles involved in intercellular communication, have emerged as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in ovarian cancer. This review summarizes the current literature on differences in exosomal protein/gene expression between chemosensitive and chemoresistant ovarian cancer, and the effects of exosomal modifications on chemotherapeutic response.

To research the value of Autostrain right ventricular (RV) technology in detecting and preventing right ventricular myocardial injury in patients undergoing breast cancer chemotherapy by providing an imaging basis for early identification. To examine the changes in various cardiac function parameters before and after chemotherapy, two-dimensional echocardiography was employed 48 h before chemotherapy, 48 h after the fourth cycle of chemotherapy, and 48 h after the eighth cycle of chemotherapy, respectively. The patients included those with breast cancer who underwent surgery and were primarily administered anthracycline-based chemotherapeutic drugs.

Pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma (PRMS) is an extremely rare soft tissue tumor with dismal prognosis that has a higher incidence in adults compared to the other RMS subtypes. The unique PRMS cell line BH1522 was established from a pleural effusion of a lung metastasis and the characteristics of this cell line were compared to two embryonal type RMS (ERMS) cell lines. The affected patient had been treated by surgery, several cycles of chemotherapy and thoracoscopy of the lung metastases.
